Segment Idea-- With Age Comes Wisdom for the Emerging Generation of Leaders I’m contacting you with a segment idea about how the arrogance of youth led a family enterprise successor to be sacked, and why the character of emerging leaders is of the utmost importance.. The Big Idea: The mistakes made through youthful arrogance can become a springboard to wisdom if, after experiencing a defeat, a degree of soul-searching takes place. Change that needs to occur from inside out is often sparked by a major setback. But alongside a reckoning with one’s own fallibility can come the understanding that traits such as humility, empathy, gratitude and patience serve one as well, if not better, than their business acumen. The So-What: Author David Bentall recounts his personal experience stepping into his family’s business enterprise — and stepping on many toes in his short time span. After he was summarily shown the door, he had to examine his behavior and, in time, realize all that was wrong in his approach. From his soul-searching journey, David offers nine character traits needed for transformative leadership, how to cultivate them, and exemplary leaders (and successors) who embody them. Key Messages: Bentall provides valuable lessons learned from his failed experience as a family enterprise successor and his career advising other family businesses. He addresses: How character flaws in leaders have led to the fall of numerous corporate giants What nine essential leadership qualities can be developed and applied What distinguishes those that succeed from those that languish How emerging leaders can prioritize their own character development through the help of mentors and role models Why introspection after a setback is important in order to learn and grow The Source: David C. Bentall is founder of Next Step Advisors and has been advising family enterprises for over 25 years. He has also personally experienced succession in his family’s real estate and construction businesses. Additionally, he is a gifted author, coach, speaker and facilitator. His new book, Dear Younger Me: Wisdom for Family Enterprise Successors (Castle Quay Books, May 3, 2021), explores the character traits critical for navigating the interpersonal demands of a family business enterprise.
