While there is no doubt that David was the object of the people’s affection, their love for him was more than that. It was their response to him —the one whom the Lord was with, who was doing for them what their king had failed to do. Their love was “the kind of attachment people had to a king who would fight their battles for them.” It is important to see that this kind of love is required of God’s people for God himself.
