from How did you get into sport? · host Luis Resa

Send us Fan MailDavid Wellington (Wello) is the Head Physiotherapist for the ACT Brumbies who compete in the premier Rugby competition in Australia, Super Rugby. Wello has been a close friend of mine in the industry and I had the luxury of graduating with him as part of our Undergraduate Physiotherapy degree. Since then, Wello has gone on to forge a career in sport with such sports as Baseball, Cricket, Soccer and of course Rugby. Wello talks about his journey from growing up in rural North Queensland, to playing professional rugby himself in Portugal, to now leading the physio department of Australia’s most successful Rugby club. Highlights from the episode…Wello shares how a boy growing up in rural North QLD. had a desire to pursue a career in sports physiotherapy. What Wello learnt from his first role in Gympie Hospital that has helped him in professional sport to this day. While playing overseas as a professional Rugby player, Wello shares what injury management looked like in Portugal. How he was able to transition from Rugby into soccer, a sport he was completely unfamiliar with, yet still excell in his role. Wello shares the importance of of understanding the impact of a player to the team when considering return to play decisions. Wello and I discuss the value of completing a Masters degree…and it isn’t to simply obtain another qualification to maximise your potential to be hired. How Wello eventually secured a role in professional sport with the ACT Brumbies. The "80/20 principle" and how this influences injury surveillance, allocation of resources, management strategies etc. in sport. Outside of his clinical skills what other skills Wello found were important to hone…One is empathy! One of the most powerful questions you should ask your athlete when managing a stubborn injury. In sport prone to an abundance of contact injuries, Wello shares how the Brumbies manage contact injuries to decrease days missed from training and maximise performance.  People mentioned. Tim McGrath: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-mcg/?originalSubdomain=auHamish McCauley: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hamish-macauley-13944365/Ed Hollis: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ed-hollis-66a16732/?originalSubdomain=auByron Field: https://www.linkedin.com/in/byron-field-b6a171225/?trk=public_profile_samename-profile&originalSubdomain=auKonrad Schultz: https://www.linkedin.com/in/konrad-schultz-1b725538/?originalSubdomain=au David Wellington contact details. LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-wellington-4660915b/?originalSubdomain=au Clinic details: https://www.pephysio.com.au/tuggeranong-staff-members/Host: Luis ResaContact me on:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/luis-resa-a975196b/Email: [email protected] for listening and please leave a review.
