Dawson Creek Ends SPCA Animal Control | Calgary News

Dawson Creek is cutting ties with the BC SPCA, ending their animal control contract at year’s end — a move that’ll shift daily stray and at-large animal response to city staff, saving $300K annually but raising urgent questions about public safety, animal welfare, and community support for strays, especially in winter. The SPCA, which has served Dawson since 1999 and helped cut strays by 37%, now faces funding gaps and unclear protocols — leaving residents unsure who to call when an aggressive dog or neglected pet threatens safety or compassion.
