There will be no negotiated freedom and no halfway deliverance. The Lord is showing that He alone is God, and He will rescue His people by power.These chapters lead to the center of Exodus: the Passover. Judgment comes, and the only refuge is not effort or worthiness, but the blood of a spotless lamb. A substitute dies so the household can live.
