This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom The Gospel of John – 30 – Abiding – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 09/11/2022 The Gospel of John – Part 4 Confirmation Of The Word – Abiding   Today we continue our series, the Good News according to John the Apostle. Last week, we saw Jesus teaching the disciples that the way to overcome fear is to allow the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to fill us and bring peace to our hearts as we read in John 14:27  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.   Our scripture for today is John 15:1-11, starting on page 1676 in the pew Bible. Jesus teaches us a valuable lesson about Abiding in Him. Follow along as I read. 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.   After hearing of Jesus’ imminent departure from the world on the eve of His crucifixion, fear gripped the disciples like a steel vice. How could they possibly go on without Jesus? What would come of His kingdom? Was the Lord challenging them to build a kingdom without a king? Not exactly.   First, He promised that His going away played a crucial role in the plan of God to redeem the world and that He would return (John 14:1–15).   Second, He promised He would not leave them to fend for themselves; He would be present within them in the person of the Holy Spirit, whose role is to teach and provide courage (14:16–24).   Third, He promised confidence in the truth of His words and comfort in His continual presence would grow as they...
