Day 2949– “Marching Orders for True Disciples” – Luke 11:37-54 Putnam Church Message – 09/06/2026 The Good News According to Luke: “Marching Orders For True Disciples”   Last week, our message was “Clean From The Inside Out,” and we learned that we must let Christ make us clean...from the inside out. Today, we continue with our thirty-seventh message from Luke’s narrative of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Today’s message is: “Marching Orders For True Disciples.” Our core passage today is Luke 12:1-12, starting on page 1616 of your pew Bibles. Warnings and Encouragements 12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[a] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. 4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. 8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.” Opening Prayer Father, as we open Your Word today, give us ears to hear the marching orders of our King. Lord Jesus, protect us from hypocrisy, fear, denial, and anxious self-reliance. Give us courage to live openly before You, to fear God more than people, to confess Your name without shame, and to trust the Holy Spirit when we do not know what to say. Prepare us not merely to follow You when the crowds are cheering, but to remain faithful when the road becomes difficult. Holy Spirit, strengthen our hearts and shape us into true disciples. In Jesus’ name, amen. Introduction: Marching Orders Before the Battle As Jesus looked ahead, the cross was looming larger on the horizon. Back in Luke 9, Jesus had set His face toward Jerusalem. From that point forward, every road, every conversation, every miracle, every confrontation was taking Him closer to betrayal, trial, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. And when Jesus looked over His shoulder, what did He see? / Thousands of people. / Luke describes a crowd numbering literally tens of thousands—so large and disorderly that people were stepping on one another. From the outside, it probably looked like tremendous success. / If we had been Jesus’ public-relations advisers, we might have said: “Jesus, this is working!”“The crowds are growing.”“The movement is expanding.”“The religious establishment is nervous.”“You have momentum.” But Jesus knew something the crowd did not know. They imagined triumph in Jerusalem. / Jesus knew the cross awaited Him there.They imagined Rome being defeated. / Jesus knew He would be nailed to a Roman cross.They imagined religious leaders finally recognizing Him. / Jesus knew those leaders were already plotting against Him.They imagined glory without suffering. / Jesus knew glory would come through And somewhere within that enormous crowd were genuine disciples—men and women who would soon need courage greater than they could imagine. So Jesus turns to them first. / It is almost like a commanding officer gathering the troops before battle. / “Listen carefully.” / “This is what you need to remember.” / “These are your marching orders.” And the setting makes these instructions especially important. Last week, in “Clean From The Inside Out,” Jesus confronted the Pharisees and religious lawyers. He exposed outward religion without inward transformation. He condemned leaders who looked clean but carried pride, greed, hypocrisy, and spiritual corruption within. Now Jesus turns to His disciples and essentially says: “Do not become like them.” The danger is not merely that Pharisees exist. / The danger is that pharisaism can spread. / Like yeast. / Quietly. / Gradually. / Almost invisibly. So Jesus gives His followers four commands: Beware of hypocrisy.Fear God rather than people.Confess Christ openly.Trust the Holy Spirit when opposition comes. Those marching orders are just as necessary today. So let’s explore these four commands as disciples of Christ as listed in your bulletin insert on the side that says: Marching Orders for True Disciples.   Command 1: Guard Your Heart Against the Leaven of Hypocrisy (Vs 1-3) Jesus begins: “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees—their hypocrisy.” That is a fascinating image. / Jesus does not say the Pharisees themselves are the greatest danger. / He says their hypocrisy is dangerous because hypocrisy spreads like yeast through dough. Ancient Context: Leaven People in Jesus’ day knew this image immediately. / They baked bread regularly. / A baker might save a small piece of fermented dough from yesterday’s batch and knead it into fresh dough. (Like sourdough starter) It was tiny compared with the whole lump. / But give it time. / Eventually, it permeated everything. That is Jesus’ warning. / Hypocrisy usually does not take over a life overnight. / It begins small. / One concealed compromise. / One little performance. / One difference between what we say publicly and what we practice privately. / One moment where appearance becomes more important than truth. / Then another. / And another. / Eventually, we become comfortable playing a role. What Is Hypocrisy? The Greek word came from the world of theater. / An actor would wear a mask and portray someone he was not. / Onstage, that was expected. But Jesus says the Christian life must never become a stage performance. Hypocrisy says: “I want people to believe something about me that is not actually true.” It is possible to lie without saying a word. / We can lie with behavior. / We can appear humble while craving applause. / Appear generous while resenting every gift. / Appear forgiving while privately...
