Moses is on the mountain talking with the Creator of the universe, and his request is as bold as it is human: “Please show me your glory.” That single line from Exodus 33 captures what so many of us carry beneath the surface. We want to know God is real. We want to feel his presence. We want confidence that he’s with us when life gets confusing, painful, or slow.Then we turn one page back to Exodus 32 and see the other side of the same moment. While Moses waits and prays, the Israelites grow restless and ask Aaron to make them a god they can see, touch, and control. They hand over their gold and end up worshiping a calf. We talk about why this is the root of idolatry, why our hearts keep drifting toward immediate gratification, and why John Calvin’s phrase “the heart is an idol factory” still explains so much of modern spiritual life.We also get uncomfortably practical. Your idol probably isn’t a golden statue in the yard, but it might be your career, your bank account, your hobby, your boat, your family, or even ministry. When good things become ultimate things, they start carrying our comfort, security, and identity.
