Day 423 of Oral Surgery Residency: “The End Of Trauma Surgery Rotation” #doctorgallagher 8.28.22

An unforgettable experience. Humbling. The things I saw this month were like nothing I’ve seen before. The saddest turn of events for some patients. We have so, so much to be thankful for. That’s probably why I listened to country music so much this month lol- I only just started listening just recently. I wasn’t a fan growing up. I initially agreed with the traditional stereotype that country music is “all the same, about drinking beer, a girl, or a pickup truck” and it seemed so plain and simple. I was first introduced to country music 2.5 years ago at the ASDA annual session in St. Louis (dental conference). We had gone to this country bar @stlpbr and I had the greatest bar experience ever. Then I started getting into country as my gf @elluzpolanco and her sister’s bf @jfrap50 showed me more songs that they liked. I loved it. And then I started oral surgery residency and life just started to get so much busier and more complicated. Working 6 days a week, only one full weekend off a month, 12+ hour shifts every day, etc etc. And then Trauma rotation, where you see patients lose arms and feet and even their life sometimes. I’ve started to appreciate the simple things in life so much more with all this going on, and started listening to more country. The music is so much more than that typical “beer, girl, truck” stereotype, but one of the things I love most is how it brings you back to your roots, the little things that remind you of home and growing up and stuff like that. Side note: I don’t think of country as a location or type of person, to me it’s a perspective, an attitude, a feeling. It’s so important to appreciate the simple things in life.
