Balak pays Balaam to curse Israel, but every time Balaam opens his mouth, blessing comes out instead. Four oracles, each more powerful than the last. God's blessing on His people cannot be purchased or reversed by any external force. But then the threat shifts. Israel is seduced by Moabite women into idolatry and sexual sin. No curse from outside could touch them, but compromise from within nearly destroys them.
