In het vroegste begin leerde de Oudste Magiër de dieren hun rol, maar de krab Pau Amma weigerde en speelde met de zee. Dit veroorzaakte vloedgolven en overstromingen. De Oudste Magiër confronteerde Pau Amma, die bekende dat hij zich niet bewust was van de gevolgen van zijn spel. Als straf nam de Magiër Pau Amma's harde schild af en dreigde hem over te laten aan andere dieren. Uiteindelijk gaf de Magiër de krab zijn schild voor elf maanden van het jaar terug, op voorwaarde dat hij tijdens de twaalfde maand zacht zou zijn ter herinnering aan de magie.
