De hogepriesters waren de belangrijkste aanstichters, en de primaire kwestie was de Tempel en Jezus' uitdaging daaraan. Jezus onderwees over het koninkrijk en werd terechtgesteld als would-be koning. Zijn discipelen verwachtten dat hij na zijn dood zou terugkeren om het koninkrijk te vestigen. De intocht symboliseerde het komende koninkrijk en Jezus' rol daarin. Judas verraadde Jezus' pretentie als koning aan de overpriesters, wat leidde tot zijn executie door Pilatus op aandringen van het Joodse leiderschap.
