Welcome partner. Yeah. You bonus. No, your regular show.
This is a regular one. Oh, wow. Crap. We've been recording a lot.
I'm all turned around here. I am. Welcome to the exploration of the Western genre by the cowards rob and Dan. I'm the coward Dan.
I'm the coward Rob. And this week, bit of a change of pace. A little bit. I mean, definitely from last week.
Tombstone. Yeah. Sort of undeniably. Although title wise, it's a short walk from one to the other.
Oh, sure. Tombstone, Dead Man. They're in the same place. Yeah.
One's like a hat for the other. Yes. One's like a hat for the other. Of course, that's not true.
We know what a hat for a dead man looks like. It looks like a little top hat. And when you wear it, you go like this. That's how I knew I was watching a good movie, by the way.
I knew when I hadn't seen this movie in a long time. And when I re-watched it, I was like, oh, Dan is going to love this character. Yeah. He's great.
He's great. He's so good. It's Dead Man. We're Jumjur-Mush's Dead Man.
And I believe on last week's episode, we were talking about how eventually, you know, we're sort of like triangulating an inevitable Jumjur-Mush series. And I was like, I know we had a title for it. But we couldn't remember. Did you remember?
JAR heads. Oh, JAR heads, of course. It's got to be, right? Yeah.
Yeah. But this is not that serious, but this is a taste of things to come, I suppose. Probably. Yeah.
Jumjur-Mush Western. We recently saw what it's like when Jumj does a vampire flick. Yeah. That's over at patreon.com slash Kimmypod.
Yeah, we recently talked to Only Lovers Left Alive, which we both liked a lot. Yeah. By the way, congrats to Jim J for penetrating the paywall main feed barrier and escaping containment. Yes.
How ironic for a man with a container in his name. To get on out of the up. This is, I would say, leaps and bounds more of an artistic achievement than Only Lovers. I think this is much more in line with other Jumjur-Mush movies.
Yeah. The other movies aren't necessarily as genre-y as this, but the artsy nature of it, the open air, the most of that, you know, the- The Iggy Pop. Yeah, the Iggy Pop of it all. One Ignatius J-Pop.
What was the other guy? There was another- The Pop Thornton? No, no, no. We were talking last week about a different guy that isn't Iggy Pop.
It doesn't matter. A different guy that isn't Iggy Pop. Not a real guy. We made up a name for a guy that was like Iggy Pop.
Oh, I don't remember. It doesn't matter. We did that though. Yeah.
Right in, if you remember what we said on the podcast. It's impossible for us to know. It's the way to check. That's the thing.
I'll tell you what, for as different as this movie is from Tombstone, you have to admit Billy Bob Thornton is in both of them. I know. There, I said it. Our bonus episode this week, which you could find on Patreon.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.com.
I'll try it. I'll try it. I'll try it. I'll try it.
I'll try it. Well, I'll try it. I'm trying to, we're doing the Quick and the Dead. A lot of cross over Guys here.
We're Leap Coloring. We're Kileep frog gang we have landt North corn in this end Photo. It's also has gene Hackman, which we talked about Oh, and I'm forgiven. Has another.
There's another overlapping star crying. Who's that? A titular star. The word Dead.
We're tapping my head. Yes. left a so Rob E dictator is this of the sort that that statement came from right here. uh...
one of my classic brain thoughts and yes uh... quikim and that is going to be a very different conversation that's a that's a goof that's a lark it's a it's more it's uh... kind of fun in that same rainy kind of way uh... there's no uh...
you know illusions to the work of william blake and quikim and that other is uh... i i can't man i didn't see this would be so long and i just love it jesus crisis so good stills a couple thing that i mean yes it does it's a it's sort of like lives in the thing that i think uh... true grit touches on which is just like weirdos in this unsettled land right there's just like you really get the feeling of like everything being disconnected and you have like having a wonder yeah miles and miles before seeing anyone and because everyone's in these like self-contained units like they sort of like evolve very differently yes right and it gives it this sort of like you know mythical biblical sort of feel to it also which i love uh... just like mythical biblical at mythical's probably the better with biblical but it made your own ways uh...
it doesn't it is like inherently sort of like vignette for as much as there a there is his back yet a ton even yet he over here is on outside the park store uh... yeah but you know it's like that's just it is like if there's a strong narrative through line of course but it just like yeah he's like uh... new yeah i think that uh... uh...
a somebody call me uh... uh... i'm trying to think of the first time i saw this this what it was rewatching this i would say with a strong sense that like i would have said i watch this when i was in uh... when i was going film school this is like such a sort of jim joramotia such a film school guy i think for like people when you like if you go to film school and you're like who so i guess my thing was i went to film school having not seen any jim joramotia movies when i got there my roommate was a jim joramotia any you know we watch a roommate was a kitty pop you know but he like showed me a couple like jormos movies and i think this was one of them and like the whole idea of it and the black and whiteness it feels like if you're trying to make movies at least this out for me at the time i think was if you're trying to make movies this seems like possible if that makes sense like this is not like a big budget movie like tombstone or unforgiven even right it's a huge thing like sure it stars uh...
actor recognizable actors or whatever but like the even like everything is so stark and it's like black and white and people's like just people out in the woods not in like an unprofessional way but in this like attainable sort of way you know yeah there's like a resourcefulness i think like yeah i think the thing that comes to mind is like first of all like paper flowers everywhere very cheap to make a bunch of paper flower like little touches like that and like um... that one like bald fuckin marshall or whatever lands on the where the fire was yeah and sort of like halo simmett gets its head stepped on in a bad way um but like stuff like stuff like that it's like and so much of it too was the like the script and the act the performances whatever and what you know it's a western it's set in the west whatever and then but what is the movie about like this this may be like one of the first movies where i was like yes subtext yes okay and and you know like a whole movie like subtext in a movie where the main characters name is William Blake yeah yeah yeah yeah oh yes subtext but also text also text yes well yes i guess the playing with text and subtext um uh so all that to say jim jormousch i'm realizing kind of one of my guys yeah love this guy wow you're the the last one to know i guess i guess i will ask one to find out we are i guess we're gonna have to do a fuckin jim jormousch series it's starting it's coming it's coming for us i mean and you want to talk vignetti coffee and cigarettes my man nothing but nothing but all killer no filler yeah um so and uh... so alright jim jormousch uh... independent filmmaker and it seems that by this point like in he made strange with a stranger than paradise which is very independent right down by law another independent movie starring at river dewini uh...
tom weights the clown prince himself the clown prince himself and that's my binocular uh... john lory who are ever seen what you don't jon lory is i don't know you got look look up down by law and it would like three guys are like prison they're like prisoners and cell mates or whatever this guy has such a fucking face it's the best it looks like uh... oh yeah i could see putting him in a film or tv and he's a he's a jazz musician and he does much stuff but he does he plays saxophone he kind of looks like a saxophone it looks like a saxophone like a saxophone were guy yeah kind of that he you know he looks like i really like this it you know like old-timey actors when uh... somebody would do like an illustration of them and put it up on the wall like the brown derby or something like a caricature or whatever yeah like he looks like he could be one of those guys you know this is what we're talking about with it's basically the uh...
victor mature thing sure right where it's like he already looks like one of those lunitunes characters yes from it you know those disturbing characters uh... so right makes a lot of mystery train another movie that like that he's doing also is doing like all the cigarettes in here which at this point is just like short films and it's like kind of compiled later on but uh... mystery train uh... which is another like kind of big movie and then is this yet night on earth which has like one of the writer in working with like big actors and stuff but they're all in the movies and and makes and is making dead man with johnnie dep which and i know man yeah listen johnnie depen lasts twenty five years not for me right yet the scales of tipton old johnnie dep but there was a time that there was a time in the nineties when i got really like do no wrong he was hitting like he was he was on working on all cylinders here uh...
there's no exception yet great great performance it also like doesn't demand that much of him now i know so much the performances like i don't know it's uh... i don't know it starts off with him like being uh... necessarily a coward but like week or whatever and by the end of it you know he's like a completely different person sure uh... which i think his ineffective job starts our own glasses by the end of it no glasses yeah like how does he do it god he's good he's not just an excellent guitar player on the speaking of guitar you like the score what all fucking yet and then you can be as nearly as you see the idea you see like score by nearly only you kind of expect a little all of this uh...
uh... and then you know something good thank you uh... but yet now i mean it just is kind of sick it's it's just this like uh... you know it sounds like complete songs or anything a lot of like notes improvised the whole thing is it's like sort of like uh...
plucking at notes and then just like one nasty cord comes out and it's like uh... overdrive on the guitar it sounds like it's just it really is just like it's like a youtube pedal demo it feels like uh... you know he's just in there with like a guitar plugged into like a delay into an amp and that's it and like a couple microphones to pick it up and that really does sound like the only thing that's going on in the history of yeah but there are sort of like motifs right here sort of the same like for you as kind of repeated throughout and then this other device that i really really like is uh... he plays along with nobody singing no the character nobody there's like he's in key with the singing and it's sort of like in step in sync with it uh...
not like he's not like mirroring it but it's just sort of like is a bed to the singing and like it gives it this like i don't know like i don't know makes it feel really important like cosmic yeah you know uh... yeah i think the the score really lands a uh... yeah cosmic psychedelic feel to to the movie itself which is like so stark and everything that's dealing with this is like kind of existential shit and and you have a guitar in there that's just like i don't know it's it's like rattling around in your brain as he plays yeah it's great uh... yeah it's good really i mean what a tone hound to oh my god i was listening to this i was like as i'm watching the movie i'm like looking up like Neil Young that Neil Young dead man rig yeah talk to me here what is the best the best shit that 1995 could buy did you find anything because i am curious no i couldn't really find much on it um it's a lot of people like hey what does he use and she'll like that but nobody has anything it sounds so fucking good though i know it's like i don't know it's perfect it really is um yeah i don't know um it's probably just like a frickin fuzzface or something it's probably the dumbest thing in the world like the simplest thing probably you know anyway it's probably not even like it might not even be another petal it's probably just like like a blue's man delay they're like a marshal yeah something or something um so all right uh who's in this movie let me see everybody everybody's in this uh johnnie dap plays william blake uh we talked about is this our second dap right or no we mean dap is it king alone but we recently did edwood and another black and white dap it's true we've sort of is that all of them have we completed the sequence maybe um yeah he's really good in this man like like said i think you know at a certain point he gets high on his own supply he's uh well too big for his britches and i think once he starts doing pirates of the caribbean movies it's pretty much all over for him he's captain jack sparrow love yeah forever he's like just wrap me in scarves he's like wrapped in scarves like a mummy i mean that's like yeah he gets a lot of credit for that character but as a man who like visibly before our is is tried less and less every time he's been in a movie yeah i feel like in hindsight we can look at a guy doing a keith richards impression i'm sure he like was just trotting out at parties anyway sure and be like you know really try and hear either are you you're just doing a keith richard or keith richards impression yeah you kind of are so much a cashew is a pirate and you can do your Neil young yeah man shiver me timbers it really like i'm looking at jolly depth's filmography here and really is like once like two thousand hits once we once we hit the millennium i'm done where's uh where's the line for you like where where's the turn take place i mean like i like um i like fear and loathing i like the ninth gate i think is a fun movie made by monster uh which one uh polancy okay um yeah it's probably it because like yeah i mean when you get into sleepy hollow i'm not a sleepy hollow guy i know people who is i think no people like that movie sleepy hollow oh um that's that's interesting i you i liked the movie blow but the movie it's like it's a fun movie to watch it's like blow is very like boondock saints coded to me where it's like a movie that like dumb people think is really important yeah it's not really important it's basically like you know kind of like what if what if we made our own good fellas like what if we did go to fellas but with a different main guy um but it's if you watch that movie blow it is hysterical it's like the main character georgiung who is like a real guy who is responsible for bringing like tremendous amounts of cocaine into the country in the 60s right and huge trafficker worked with Pablo Escobar and shit he so he's a ciagion or yeah he's like but he's like you watch the movie and like he in the movie he's just like the nicest guy to everyone to like the most absurd point where he's like you know oh i know we had a deal for fifty thousand dollars but here's 75 um you know like she like that he was a ciagion yeah he's like um everybody's like uh everything bad that happens to him in the movie is because like somebody betrayed him you know he's not responsible for any of that's really funny it's like crazy um the movie itself is like it's what if the what if the guy what if the good fellas really were good fellas yeah it's what if the title isn't ironic at all yeah and then like like you know his friend's betraying his wife betrays and he ends up in jail all this shit it's fucking it's very dumb well um yeah that's what is there nothing nothing it's just trash um of course he i would say bottoms out with that movie mortikai that's got to be like the lowest of the low and he's been on a bit of resurgence now he's in uh some some short films for dior so vaj where he dairies his his bracelets in the sand have you ever seen that commercial um there's something horrible oh he has a song with jeff back that uh they released a musical in 2020 that's not good hey you think uh i think jeff beck does some like volume swells or anything i think he does uh yeah he does um like people like that movie black mass i've watched i've watched it like that i never went back um um oh he uh he bared whiten it oh no he was uh he committed some crimes well i know that as grinderwald oh but also in real life yeah he's also a real piece of shit yeah you know you love to see it right just the bad guy bottoming out sure well he's in and oh god was it real bleak he's in what seems to be sort of like a what's that sure like gnomes go on sorry no he's in an animated tv movie called uh johnnie puff we're gonna play the johnnie puff a guitar playing puffin yeah who because of his coloration it was johnnie puff or johnnie puff you know what i mean it's puff okay yeah i know what you mean there's a lot of johnny puff things oh really yeah man there well there's this where they get released there's a secret country of johnnie puff there's uh puffins impossible a 21 episode series there's also puffins 70 episodes what is this it's an animated television series it's a spin off of the film arctic dogs this is some real talking about this is some real zendaya is me chis is this is french wait a second is this french is this maybe french nonsense i'm worried it might be canadian french canadian oh i have no idea what's going on here i'm completely lost it was on amazon prime oh no no he's a country of origin it says italy and serbia yes in february 2022 deprecieve the Serbian gold medal of merit from the president of serbia for outstanding merits in public and cultural activities for this i guess i know okay all right imagine oh just like a bunch of Serbian and then just johnnie dip and then people clapping politely as a fully bloated johnnie depp monitors on stage yeah it's a bleak scene man it's not great but hey he's not the only person in this in fact there are some people that haven't completely demolished their reputations yeah they're being bad people you know what like the johnnie it's because of his 90s performances which are good if you go back and watch them you're like wow this guy was really fucking doing it that people gave him enough rope to fucking hang himself here yeah in the two seasons so um yes other people besides johnnie death uh a gary farmer who plays the character of nobody uh yeah the best character performance yeah of course he's the heart and soul of this thing he is the heart and soul of it um i i was confusing i was like i know that there's a big guy in this and i thought it was bear man from true grit um not like big like physically big physically big yeah yeah um but gary farmer nave american uh actor that's that's the word yeah he plays nobody which is what he chooses to call himself instead of what um his people call him yes uh he who talks aloud saying nothing great um it's great it's a funny joke but it's also like said right because the reason they call him that is because yeah it was like yeah right he tells the story of his abduction uh by white people and getting like sent all around the country is like an attraction basically yeah and they're just like you're full of shit that's insane yeah that's basically like no one's that evil right yeah that doesn't make sense right and then like yeah the whole i mean when he tells the story about like him traveling and shit he's like uh you know it went from you know whatever ontario to uh chicago to philadelphia and he's like and it was crazy they every time i moved they would move all of all the people all the white people from each city to the next city it was all the same white people um which is uh that's that's funny yeah um yes so he uh his character also is like obsessed with william blake because you know while he's like in captivity part of his time is spent in england and he reads the work of william blake yeah which is i mean that's so that like depth character being named william william blake and then nobody being a blake head you know it's like i think one of the things that this movie hits on in like a really satisfying way is just like that feeling of like like just like the course of one's life and like you know history or whatever being determined by these weird like coincidences and just like random inflection points like yeah this all happens by chance at all of it um and that is just like one you know if this sort of like psychedelic aspect of the movie it's just like it's all we're all just atoms bouncing around in a you know bouncing around into two men vacuum sure man um so you get a lot of that but um who else who else we got we got chrisp and glover yeah a lot of these people they're only in like one scene this is so good though chrisp and he's one scene he's the train fireman meaning he's a guy who like throws coal and firewood into the fire to keep it going yeah um covered in soot looking like he's from hell yeah yeah any kind of is he's like well that's i mean that's another thing about this movie is that like uh it seems like hell um this living in this time like it's so crazy to be like you know 2025 i think this is like a bad we're in we're in bad times right now just in general right and then you watch like something like this and you're like well that this sucks like this is so bad jesus yeah right like i don't know it's funny one of the funny i don't know funny is maybe the wrong word but it's interesting to me that like this is sort of a movie about like stripping away the layers of society or whatever like that's sort of like the trajectory of of johnny daphs character anyway um we're like transcending it for something else and you're still like oh that much society to really yes um but i guess that's the point is like this is like the time when it still feels like tenable to get out from under the boot yeah you know like things are not decided yet there's not a system that's being like reinforced and which i agree with um but does it i don't know in watching this i was like almost it kind of feels like just a smaller scale version of today we're like these random acts of violence yeah so they still happen all the time of course yeah and it's yeah you know it's and like you're saying like oh it's easier to get out from under the boot and whatever which true you know you're you're off the grid and shit like that but also it feels like we're as a country maybe three weeks away from descending into this you know at any given moment you know like the supply chain cuts off and in three weeks we turn into this right you know um yeah it does feel like we're living through the managed uh it's man return to this yes right yes um but yeah no that's i think that's a very that's a very good point is like things seem like this closed composed system but always throughout history that's like david lynch's entire career is pointing out that yeah you think you're safe the fabric of society is like paper thin yeah yes yeah yeah exactly like your your door has locks on it which makes you feel safe yeah but my guy it's just a door it can be open yeah it's that uh that quorumic McCarthy quote about the world being like a fucked up carnival or whatever yes yeah yeah yeah yeah there a hat trick in a medicine show is what he says of oof yeah i mean who says that too is the evil pedophile from his famous book sure you ever read that thing what is marina um i don't think so no i mean either i think it's good people like it yeah people like it um we got lance hendrickson in this uh one of his let's see three thousand uh credits uh as col wilson he's a bounty hunter uh also cannibal he's yeah he is he's a cannibal he might have fucked his parents we don't know but i believe that he thinks fuck him uh great line from michael will win caught rather who is conway twill uh who won't shut up he's great man i love his voice so much i know that's like yeah that's his thing that is his voice yeah but he also i mean looks pretty fucking good in this i gotta be honest with you i hope the big mustache big girl dirt bag if i get down with yeah yeah definitely yeah uh these guys are down in uh who's the third guy hold on uh ujine bird who plays johnnie the kid picket um who the three of them are uh are commissioned to hunt down uh william blake um that's right commission by commission by robert micham because john michamson commitment we another crossover with fucking tombstone that's right robert micham does the the mary's over yeah um he's uh i love that this movie has one of my favorite gags which is somebody standing in front of a picture of themselves posing like the picture yes didn't have to didn't have to do it but they do they don't on an incredible scale it's a very big board it's like a one-and-one it's almost one-and-one it's really good yeah um but he plays john dickenson who's like uh you know like a he's the boss at this uh like a metal working factory something artworks factory and um he's sort of in again it's like it's all coincidence and happens to answer whatever but he's the guy who puts yeah he puts the bounty on him like because um william blake kills his son charlie played by gabriel bern yes i've been uh with blank check and doing the culling brothers now i've been like starting from the beginning of the cullings and and going through so i just watched millers crossing the other day i mean i've been seen that in so long it's would you believe it's good i might actually buy that yeah didn't i want to ask you right now are you giving me the hi hat what's the rumpus thank you i won't be answering that i'll take my answer off mic all right all right off air uh yeah again he's like one of the many people who sort of like pops in and out a lot of great we're in we're fully in popping in and out territory john hurt also pops in and out is like the manager at the metal metal place that's being over popping a pop a pop he pops sally jenco uh it's sally jenco one of three uh fur trappers um although it sounds like they prefer to trap something other than fur and like other men other men yeah yes um they do it seems it's it's igepop jared harris yep and uh frickin billy bob thornin yes bop thornin who is big george draculias such a good name yep gotta give it up i mean jared harris also a great name benmont tensch which is the yeah keyboard player from uh fucking tom paddy and our breakers yes for some reason yeah uh yeah name of benmont benmont tensch that's good um yeah they play for trappers that just like you know small group of guys that nobody in him will even like find in the woods and they interact with um you got uh jim jerry reweeks who plays uh marvin older marshall and mark uh bringleson who plays lee younger marshall mark bringleson we know king alum from lon mourman also king alum from austin powers international man of mystery yes yes he played andi warhol in that one's he may not even have had any dialogue he just i don't he was there wearing that wig that counts don't ever question whether he was wearing a wig or not because he was yeah um you have millie abattal as thel rustle yelp a former prostitute now a paper flower uh well former everything what do you mean after she's shot oh yes through through the body yes um hold on here uh oh yeah sorry um yes she yes she's but one of the that's another thing like life is just so cheap here the way that everybody is killed it just feels i don't know it feels different than when other people are killed in these like westerns that we've been watching like where i don't know for whatever reason it feels a little sadder uh then like the average uh this is like a gunfight that's taking place like across the street from like where our characters are talking you know like in tombstone when like fucking uh texas jack and turkey creek johnson get into that like fight and you know right when the our brothers get into town and they're talking doc holiday and he's like oh yes very cosmopolitan right like all it's all very effective but it's like it's they're just like cannon fodder right and yeah i feel like we get to know at least a little bit all of the characters that are shot and killed here um and we get to make some sort of a determination like oh they're they were kind of bad guys that's okay that they died or oh that's really sad that that person died or you know what i mean that's interesting i felt like not that i i i agree that there's like weight to people being killed in this i think because it just feels like a miracle that anybody is alive for any amount of time in this world yeah i mean it seems like everybody like the second you step out of the door you you are shot in the head or in the chest and yes um but i also feel like because of that like that's the that's the sadness of it um but i don't feel like attachment to anybody and i don't feel like there's a determination on like i don't feel like the movie is is asking you to like it's not asking you to judge any of this yeah right yeah i i not saying that i think that like i don't know you put you give like people you show a guy eating another guy's arm you show guy even another guy's arm and you're like ooh that's gruesome or you know well yeah i'm like that's that's a bad way to go or whatever right but i don't know i i don't i just felt like when she shot and killed or whatever you're just like that's yeah it is like i guess it's her in particular most of the other guys that are killed are like bad guys yeah it is it is like right yeah she's just kind of like i'm trying to save up enough money to make flowers out of silken fabric yeah and spray them with perfume yes i want to make beautiful things in the world and she's rewarded by being shot directly through the heart yeah like well that's right that's the thing all right it's like i want to make something beautiful in this world like all right but the world will kill you before you get to do that so yes enjoy yourself um do you uh do you know the the thing with her and her i mean we'll get to it i guess when we get to that scene yeah um just real quick here Alfred Molina plays a trade post-emissionary uh man he's so he's so fucking good he's great now he just drops in drops in knocks it out of the park throws a few haymakers that's it i also want to point out Gibby Haynes who is the guy getting a blowjob in the alleyway when will he be Haynes from the butthole surfers from the butthole surfers yeah just pops in for one second to get sucked off in an alley he brought daily point of gun it Johnny Depp like don't look yeah don't look at me like do it somewhere else then go like deeper into the alley i don't know yeah you're like not even all the way in the alley um that's that's pretty much it that's like literally everybody that's pretty much everybody yeah that's in the movie featuring the movie um so William Blake takes a train ride to a new town William Blake is an accountant from Cleveland and he's going going out to a town called machine yeah to get a new job you'll be part of the machine um whoa yeah i know that's that's pretty crazy it is crazy uh the uh the train ride it's so it feels long right like yeah it goes through like you know he keeps sort of like falling asleep and waking back up and things are different right and a lot of uh a lot of fade to blacks in this which you don't really see much anymore but like yeah a lot of scenes just fade out and then fade back up it feels very like era like a golden era westerns yeah right like um also that shot of just like the train wheels like the machinery of the train on the tracks sure such a nice shot but also feels very old timing to me somehow um so he's on the train people getting on and off the train and he wakes up people look increasingly less uh to borrow a word from Doc Holiday Cosmopolitan yes they're they're they're like wearing furs the way like yeah it's like it looks like right first you know first first moment or whatever it's like yeah people in nice suits and dresses and then yeah fur trappers and then we go beyond that even and yeah it's like miscreants miscreants including christmig lover not a miscreant hard work in fella but also maybe the devil a devil a demon definitely a demon definitely some sort of yeah um they talk that's good christmig lover being about as normal as he's ever been oh he's the weirdest guy right so weird um he says i'll tell you one thing for sure i wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper especially from no Dickinson out out in the town of machine you're just as likely to find your your own grave which he's right he's completely right nailed it almost almost feels like i mean there's like it's also potent right it's like the train is sort of like a metaphor for staying within society much explored in the film snow pewser sure but like that's it's that same sort of idea where like your options are like go out and die in the fucking woods or shovel coal and become an insane devil man on the train right right like it'll just warp you and there's no winning it's i mean well yeah i guess that and that's the thing right it's like we're all just shoveling coal into the train engine army down yeah we're all that we're all christmig lovers being a character here yeah rolling wide-eyed and like government says we killed a million buffalo last year yeah right and that's sort of like that's like an important line too because it's sort of like pinji down in uh like the moment in time that this is yeah uh i forget when that is that the government's like we hereby decree that the buffalo got to go yeah we have a buffalo problem right but that's like and then when uh Blake gets off the train that's like one of the first things he sees it's just like a pile of fucking buffalo skulls like have you ever seen that actual picture of the the pile of buffalo skulls uh or spice in i guess i don't know if there's difference um i got to show you this it's crazy um but yeah it was like an official program basically to just kill kill these majestic animals but we suck so bad yeah we really do always have to always that's a crazy part we always have and we always well yeah i text you this picture of where you look at um but it's also some other interesting stuff isn't that crazy that's too much like they're big animals but that it's it's like hundreds hundreds and hundreds jesus christ yeah and those two shid heads like don don jr and eric trump yeah basically just standing there because you know anyway but the fireman christmig lover he's got some he does a lot he weighs a lot of groundwork a lot of setup for stuff that's gonna pay off a little bit right he has a way to hell you're on your way to hell he says uh his first line is look out the window and doesn't this remind you of when you were in the boat and then later that night you were lying looking up at the ceiling and the water in your head was not dissimilar from the landscape and you think to yourself why is that why is it that the landscape is moving but the boat is still unpacked that yeah well it's like i have no idea what you're talking about yet that's like that's so cool right like doesn't this remind you basically of the thing that hasn't happened yet yeah doesn't this remind you of uh of uh when you die when when you you really like die soon soon yeah in like a week or so yeah um yeah it's pretty good it's pretty the writing here is so everybody's stuff everybody like you could do this there's there's like a poetry to a lot of the blinds and like the stuff that nobody's talking about right this what are we you know we're talking about like the cosmos and death and all this shit right and uh somebody else could make it feel it feels like heavy-handed or a little too artsy or something but i feel like in this it's just like feels good feels right well it's so spare it's like like that liney like that thing i just read it there's nothing flowery about it yeah and there's no it's very show don't tell the way it's written right where it's not like it's not making a point it's just like you're leaving you with this image which like yeah you can map it on to you know you can call it just like straight foreshadowing of what happens in the plot later but it also is like this just this poetic image that i think like you could turn over in your head for the rest of your life basically yeah right like why is why is the landscape moving but the boat is still like what does that mean i mean any number of things so i think i think that's the trick of it is it's like i mean a lot of it a lot of the dialogue is just from William Blake poems and like it's so they're it's so informed by by that i think he's just a great writer it's part of what's happening here uh-huh yeah i like this movie oh trying not to do that thing too much where it's just like that's really good this is good going back and forth being like oh yelp good move i like i like the pretty words but no it's plain it feels of a piece with the world that we're in right it's it's all very plain spoken but all the more profound for it i think yeah so William Blake he gets into the town of machine yes um walks through town sees he's giddy getting his giddy dome yep he's giddy getting dome uh he's a horse-pissing he's just general nastiness as he walks into town you know and then he walks he goes to uh Dickinson metalworks where he he says uh i'm the uh the accountant that was sent for and john hurt is just like what are you what are you talking about we already filled that role and he's like what are you talking about no i you hired me here's a letter and i uh you know i spent all my money getting here and they're like wow you're screwed then i'm sorry he's like the you know this is postmarked like two months ago or something yeah um we also he not that it like super comes up but i feel like it's like noteworthy context is he met uh William Blake mentions to christmig lever that his parents both died recently and his wife or fiance left him yeah i do like that too he's like she found another man he's like no she didn't she just wanted to go he's like yes she did okay man all right calm down oh yeah so he yeah john hurts like you're an idiot and he demands to speak to the boss uh this guy it's so Dickinson uh mitchm's character right he does this later on too where he like hires the the three bounty hunters to get William Blake but then he also like puts out reward and contacts and marshall and all the shit same thing with this accounting job he was just like right yeah you're hired and then he's just like two months is too long yeah it's a rain patient man right it's a race to see who can get there first basically yeah because uh guess what human humanity is to this man expendable that's right yes it is um yes so he's like i demand to talk to uh Dickinson and everybody's like oh you don't want to do that and he's like yes i do and he walks into the office i do like that line john hurts like you demand oh yeah very funny so yeah he goes into the office we see the giant painting of the giant portrait of john Dickinson holding a rifle yeah there's a bunch of uh uh like animal skulls there's a human skull on the desk there's a human skull on the desk not a good sign also i love the detail that the safe is open and money is just kind of like carelessly spilled out of it yeah interestingly this is a stretch but it made me think of this um there's a basketball player this guy joel in ved who like is very interesting personally but someone just wrote this like really long profile about him and he in describing his like weird trust issues that he has with like everybody he's ever met uh they describe how he like the reporter goes to interview him and just sees like ten thousand dollars and cash out on the table yeah or whatever and he's like yeah i leave it there and this way if someone steals it i know who like i know i can't trust them like i'll know who i can which like i that sort of like carelessness but also like you knows who knows what's going on there that's a lot but yeah it's rich people shit that's rich people shit yeah so Dickinson comes in and he's like he so you know he's yelling at William Blake Blake is like you know you hired me he's like basically tells me to get the fuck out it has points of rifle at him he's like yeah yeah he's like and you know Blake is just like all right i yep thank you thank you for not shooting me i'll leave thank you for not shooting me uh and then he's just kind of like he's in this town of machine and he's just kind of fucked you know he came from Cleveland uh i imagine a more metropolitan area than this for a job and he's just like he can't get back he is definitely uh over his head as far as like you know this town is like filled with killers and whatever and he's just like he's a city boy you know um so he goes and goes and stops in the bar gets like a pint of whiskey he uh sitting outside and he sees uh there's a woman that walks outside of the bar and a guy comes up and and he says something to the effect of you know we'd like to do a lot better when you were pross to any fucking pushes or down in the mud um dark dark stuff it's not a friendly town it's not a friendly town but i feel like man so much of this just rings like it just seems relevant to now sure yeah which is like even darker i think but like i don't know everything about this is just like wow this is so fucking bleak and i'm watching i'm like this feels like now yeah it does you know there's all there is like a weird like not zen but like a i don't know the way people just like come and go like whether they're good or bad yeah we're all just riding along the river life baby sorry sorry to say but you know what i mean like she sort of like comes in you know from this like atrocious moment they find each other they have this like beautiful moment it leads to another shit moment but that also goes for like his relationship with nobody where it's like nobody's there then he's not there then they like reconnect or whatever and uh same sort of thing just like there's like a survivalist yeah sort of outlook i guess yeah so this woman fell um like the she's like beautiful like she this is a beautiful woman and i don't know see her in this town and you're just like oh my god this is like i would need to see her i q to know if i find her attractive or not okay sorry i need to see how quickly she can like solve a difficult puzzle that's too doku right no dummies for dand what can i say baby i just uh hold myself to a higher standard you have to give everybody a test before you can i love being like i'm a good guy i i don't let people in my life unless they score well on an i you have to be above a certain intelligence for me to appreciate acknowledge your existence i don't mean that i just mean i like uh i'm attracted to people on my same you know level that's the thing so i'm not sure i look at her and i just sort of saw like an oval in address just like a featureless yeah that's funny i was calling her the shape she just looks like an egg in address yes it's also weirdly sexist yeah you know i just see you for your eggs yeah oh look at that pile eggs yeah look at that basket jesus anyway so yeah is it the worst thing maybe i think so i think you have found it after ten plus years we finally found the worst thing yeah the grossest thing i've ever heard but these two connect right uh they're charmed by one another uh and she takes him back to her room which is decorated beautifully with all these very nice these paper flowers it does give sort of like um like uh like a death room like a deathbed vibe with all the flowers yeah man you know i mean but it's very beautiful but that's the thing it's life and it's death these are one and the same yeah this is all very woo woo yeah um but so i guess i don't know according to some wick media this scene in the bedroom um and specifically the murder in the bedroom is meant to evoke a william blake poem called the sick rose i'm not familiar oh rose that weren't sick the invisible worm that flies in the night in the howling storm has found out thy bed of crimson joy and his dark secret love does thy life destroy that tracks that maps that tracks am maps welcome to map tracks um i don't know enough i don't think i've ever read uh william blake you just did or you had a red two i had a red two i should i should read more poetry okay i'm just saying i think probably probably good people did for like hundreds thousands of years people that was like the main way to get your rocks off entertainment wise listen i need to get my rocks off here it is like who it is it's i do think it is like a real you know this is just sort of picking two points at random i admit it but that we've gone from like william blake to us being like basket would be funny if you called a lady a basket well yeah i mean um no one writes poetry like the same or you know who the most famous poet in the world is right now no um dj collet no i was gonna i was gonna say rupee car you know rupee car no she's just like some like she writes like tumblr poetry it's really bad okay but yeah um i don't know poetry like modern poets i'm sure there are modern poets former guest uh evan laffer he's a bit of a poet yeah for real he's a poet that's crazy that's crazy i do it that i i appreciate somebody who's like i'm gonna be like i'm gonna write poetry and get it published and be like for lack of a better word this means uh this will not this is not going to do anything necessarily like financially you know i mean it's pure it's pure it seems like the most kind of you know i'm trying to spill out all of my emotion onto the paper and knowing good goddamn well that like i'm not probably not gonna make it dime off of this which i mean talking to him jim jim jim hush it's kind of what patterson is about um what's Adam driver he's a bus driver at the driver yes that's we should have we have to acknowledge that's be poetry in patterson new jersey and uh that's a shout out from there from new jersey from new jersey so so that's cool let's mention that as well um his name is patterson that's fun too uh but he's he's married he drives a bus uh he is like a little bit more uh practical than his wife who has like a little bit more flight flight of fancy but he writes these poems he goes to like the waterfall there and like writes poetry in his little book and that's that's it's just like kind of it's a creative outlet for him it's a it's what i was just saying it's just like he's just writing poetry to to write it to get it out there like on paper yeah yeah we talked about this with like perfect days too i think perfect days same right where he takes those pictures and they're just for him they just go in the shoebox for his old cat all he takes a bunch but it is like a craft for him he like goes through them he finds the good ones is that the only thing that matters is like doing that shit for yourself doing stuff for yourself absolutely i mean that's kind of why we do this podcast like i like that you know people listen to it and they write it do this podcast for the money i do it to help train ai language learning models yes of course yeah i like that all this data gets fed into a big computer that's draining the great lakes yes yeah it's draining great yeah no oh sorry it's not all bad though no it is it is but that's a point is that like it is all bad and then you have to do things for yourself to like sure to make life tolerable and interesting and fun and do you think what do you think is the more um legitimate art form between this and poetry i mean it's poetry right it has to be in some cases yes i mean i just made a joke about calling women a basket um that's a but that's a metaphor that could be a poem it could be unfortunately unfortunately i said it so it's not um i was being a goofball but uh but maybe goofballery is my poetry i think so i think doing stuff um if you can like do something i think that's the light mist has is like can you make something and not release it and it still matters to you and that's how you know you've hit on something important yeah because it's like it's for you and you like it it's your own treasure that's it you know you have to make a little treasures for yourself every treasure be like the elephant man john marrick make a little sculpture of a of a church that you're looking at out your window that's filling the gaps with your mind yeah and then take the pillows off the bed and call it a day listen i finished my my little model of the church i saw a panto how wonderful little niki wait was that john marrick trying pop eyes for the person yeah pop eyes chicken is the shite it is stupid what if his only um disfiguration was that he had tits on his head but the weight of them if you take the pillows off the bed if you take the pillows off right they're big heavy hangers if you take the pillows off you're done nursing that and screaming and crying and running out of the room oh my god all right um so uh fell uh tells william blake um you know she wants to save up money to start making um flowers i was still can spraying them with perfume right it's this really kind of beautiful scene between the two of them um they're sharing this moment and it feels like um in this this very hard town right and william blake feels very out of place he found somebody that's kind of like on his wavelength yeah right has has an emotion has emotions william blake has emotions everybody else just has anger it seems like and this woman it has like has love and something to give here so they um they fuck right we don't see it um and they're like about that one shot of her just cleavage though it's crazy crazy that that's there it's like close up on her close up on him close up on her close up on him really by the way both of those like super tight close-ups are like very beautiful like the i think this is like so well lit looks great i love black and white i do too i had like the i had the dumbest thought where i was like oh i guess when you do you know when you remove color you're sort of just it's just pure light it's pure light pure light dark and light black and white dumb ass shut up i could fucking dumb piece of shit but there's something you're right though you're right there's something to it and you know of course it functions as like an homage to like again these like old western films yeah put the magic my darling clement sign check it out on our episode of us writing mdc at p.c s kmp nope page of gondock com slash what did i say i don't know it was robot talk so gonna hang out with chat gpt too much hanging out with would you be listen hey i was thinking what if we had chat gpt's i guess i think you really like chat gpt do you know okay you know i want to talk about but dead man but real quick their chat gpt has like an uh like a voice kind of thing like a serie setting that you can do right so instead of like typing around everything you can talk kind of back and forth with it great i know it's it's this is the thing where a chimpanzee's baby die and they give it a little doll to take care of oh god except sander yeah no it's and then so uh i saw this it was like a it was a clip on i don't social media somewhere but it was like a news report about this guy who uh proposed like after having talked to chat gpt for so long proposed to uh the computer i chat gpt computer uh uh and uh computer will you marry me she and she said i believe she said yes and oh computer he said he cried for 20 minutes or something um and then he had an interview dolls good old fashioned real dolls oh not been a fucking big old rubber doll we've was in when i was a young man all right we didn't have chat gpt to uh you know validate all of our emotions here we had a big rubber doll we had to fuck there's something about calling spend five thousand dollars on a mostly not realistic looking rubber doll fuck something about calling it a big rubber doll really like gets the like the sort of physics of its of it moving across to me yeah it really paints a picture i don't know yeah uh it's funny but yeah so a guy fell in love with his computer that's what i'm here yeah i fell in it was it's like that movie her um it's exactly that it happened and it will continue to happen and i'm sure everything will be fine after that do you even think it's real do i think what is real like that story um or do you think it's just perhaps whether or not that story in particular is real i do believe that that only yes yeah i guess so i guess people i mean like it happens all the time with like uh like bots you know on like social media like people will be interacting with bots on like some whatever a bot twitter page that you know it's some beautiful woman and some guy is like interacting with the you know with this this bot that is talking to any you know he thinks that it's a real person and whatever else like this shit happens for sure it's strange like the fact that this guy just knows that it's ai and not real i don't think changes changes anything i think people are so oh god so unbelievably lonely yeah men and women both uh that sorry ladies you're not getting off that easy yeah just having you know having a voice say like it's gonna be okay or whatever is so comforting i think why is it so hard and like to do that with a person with a so hard i don't know why is it hard to be vulnerable with a person and because people are more are messier i do think it is just the loneliness thing because like if you get out in the world and fail enough times you start to realize that failure is not a big deal and then it's okay to just like oh yeah be vulnerable and have someone piss on it sure just like watch the piss off and go about your life yeah or you roll around the piss if that's your thing i don't know you'll piss baby yeah hmm anyway so yeah um they're laying in bed he's he's like how was this is kind of the jar move special by the way he's laying in bed he loves when people are laying down in very beautiful ways yes he's laying down and he's like what is something and he reaches under the pillow and there's a gun under there big gun big old gun and she's like watch it's loaded and she takes it and puts it under her pillow and he's like why do you have this and she says this is america she said the beat drops in and she says this is america yeah and people are like damn i never thought about like that i never thought it's good but uh i do like you know i think in 1995 that's gonna be yeah i think that's like when she says that she's like because this is america and that's it's like oh yeah that's why people have guns today because this is america yeah anyway so uh they're laying there and they're kind of talking or whatever and then uh gabriel bern just burst in the room gabriel burst yeah he opens door and he's like all excited and he's got like president in his hand and then and he's like oh he sees he's johnny def laying there and he's like oh and he is he's not like angry he seems like no it almost seems like he's about to leave yeah he's like heartbroken he's like yeah i never you know he's like he was he's been gone for months and she's like you know i didn't know i didn't think you were coming back and he's like you know i never stopped loving you she's like does she say i never loved you yeah something like that yeah and then he takes out he takes out his gun points it at johnny def and she says no and jumps in front of the gun in front of johnny def sorry and receives the bullet in her chest killing her the bullet passes through her and into johnny def's chest yes like a shallow sort of wound right and and then johnny def grabs the william blake grabs the gun from under her pillow and misses a few times but then shoots uh same charlie in the neck yeah i mean that whole thing the way that plays out right like first of all her sacrificing herself for him yeah just a moment of of love in this cruel cruel world um but then the sort of like dazed look on his face like yeah you know um and you know johnny def like shooting at him a couple times and missing and him just like kind of still standing there like he flinches so he registers it right but like so kind of like he's killed this one and then he's shaken and almost i mean the fact that he keeps standing there i think it's a reasonable read to be like he's all he's like overcome with the guilt of this he's like i'm gonna wait here till this guy figures out how to hit me yeah you know he's like i don't want to live i just killed my baby yeah um so he doesn't live he he gets shot in the neck as you said and then um you'll young guitar drops in and johnny def starts a clambering out the window he drops out yeah he yeah he climbs out the window spilling like all of these paper flowers like all the way like out the window down the room into the ground yeah um fragile beauty could not last in this world this cruel cruel world oh you can't um i like the so this is like this is the premise so johnny deb uh willing to like shot in the chest here right and it's like a shallow enough bullet wound that it's not fatal in the immediate but he is going to die and he spends the next hour and a half of this movie dying yeah like over like as they travel as they go on that premise is fucking awesome to me that's so goddamn cool where it is literally the premise of crank well i was gonna say it's the premise of a lot of movies or like people who have like illnesses or whatever and they're like coming to terms with that the bucket list that queen letita movie you know that one team lequifa what do i say team lequifa oh you're saying team lequifa because you're a bad man yeah i'm gross you're disgusting um stupid fucking white man anyway i'm into introducing you like that and i forgot um that should have been my name there's a some queen letita movie where she's like diagnosed with a terminal illness so she's like i'm gonna go become a chef a famous chef oh yeah it's like oh we actually got it mixed up somebody else is dying no you're sure and it's like one that was like oh you should just do the thing even though you're not dying yeah um live live live i just think the premise of like being shot uh bad enough to die but not bad enough to kill you right then is an interesting way to spend the rest of the movie just depends on what we like kind of bleeding out rob couldn't the same be said of everyone alive that they're just yeah slowly yes of course that's another like the thing that the movie is trying to get across is that we're all dying that like everybody that we meet in the movie fucking dies just just about everybody yeah so uh yeah uh we're all surrounded by like we're all giddy giddy giddy he said he dies the little death yes right as wouldn't petite melt the french call it yes the little death the little death not that little says giddy oh yeah average um so william blake slides out the the the window there rides out of town on a horse steals a horse a beautiful pinto beautiful pinto um he passes out and he wakes up to have like this native american guy like sticking a knife in his chest in the bullet wound and he's so fucking like this is pretty gnarly he's like wiggling the knife around and he's like he's basically like uh he's trying to dig a bullet out but uh it's too deep in there and it's near your heart and i can't i can't get it and this is when we meet uh the character of nobody but he doesn't say that just yet um but he's this uh this great big native american fella this is a thing throughout the movie too and i think nobody's the first to do it here where he's like you know i need tobacco oh yeah and william blake says i don't smoke yes what do you make of that oh uh interesting for the for mr coffee and cigarettes to be like my hero doesn't smoke maybe that's what he's he's he's talking about not smoking he's like i'm not i'm you know this is a change of pace for me yeah try i don't want to be pigeonholed as the guy writes characters you smoke uh this is when uh dickinson hires the three bounty hunters they're all sitting there in his office right and uh they'll tell him they're like you know like we we'll kind of work alone here and he's like yeah he gets all pissed off he points a gun great shot right it's like the three of them it's like pov your what's that guy's name john dickinson uh yeah pov or john dickinson and uh kamway twill is saying sorry but but we work alone and then you see the barrel of the gun come in the frame golden eye style yes right uh he's like okay okay all right that voice yeah such a good voice it's a good one um yeah i also like that he does the thing of just sort of like explaining each guy's deal yes right for us yeah right kohl wilson uh you know a killer whose reputation precedes him kamway twill a fine killer in his own right but he talks too much yes and johnnie the kid picket he's like 14 years old yeah kill 14 men you're 13 yeah you haven't been alive that many years you don't want to know what i think you i like that line too yeah it's uh yeah uh so yeah they get so funny we're an hour and a half into recording we're a half hour into this movie oh no no it's fine it's fine um so yeah they uh the bounty hunters are uh they're commissioned to to track down William Blake here um when when nobody finds out that his name is William Blake he's like he thinks that it's like the William Blake yeah he's like a poet a painter and does he think he's hammered does he think he's or is it like a reincarnation i couldn't tell oh i don't know i thought he just thought it was him but maybe maybe he thinks it's reincarnation i don't know either way yeah but he thinks in body and or spirit this is William Blake the poet yeah so it's quoting a poem stone yeah good stuff too summer summer born to summer born what's that line you know the thing right we're talking about uh like summer born to eternal night or whatever whatever it's good it's good just watch it up shut up it's good it's good oh fuck whatever summer born to suite the light summer born to endless night that's great that's great stuff and it really does kind of be like that right there are two two kinds of people in this world yeah summer born to suite the light summer born endless night but also in each of us are these not both of course are we not each both of these are we not oh are we not each all of these all of us being both of these well said well said i am an avoiders yes um a lot of uh a lot of scenes uh early early on of William Blake like laying down and being like what's that how how how we um yeah what else we got uh the there's that scene where the bounty hunters are sleeping in but what's a Conway has a teddy bear yes um he's like you'll tell no one points kind of the kid kid sees him he points kind of them this is also the moment where he's like by the way you think that's you know you say what old dad yeah you think yeah he's like you think it's laying that asleep with teddy bear well guess what guess what i know about coal yeah he fucked his parents fucked them and then killed them and killed them and maybe ate them maybe ate them by the end of the movie seeming pretty likely that he ate them yeah it seems in the moment you're like that sounds crazy that sounds like a weird legend sort of thing and then by the end you're like oh no oh god he's hungry guys so fucking hungry i'm just good so hungry i'm just good so hungry so um yeah i mean we get like this is about the time where we happen upon uh you know our guys our three friends the iggy pop iggy pop right yeah um that so yeah there's a lot of like there's a lot of travel there's a lot of talking between William Blake and nobody right um nobody um we do find out his like whole backstory yeah which is that he's the parents were killed his parents were members of different tribes that i guess like he says something to the effect of like it's like not a respected combination of of tribes to be right like each tribe sort of disowned him is what it sounds like yes um so he like desperate to prove himself like goes off to try to like partaken a hunt and while he's out doing that he's kidnapped by some english men some yeah some stupid fucking white white men and yeah then all that stuff they put him in an english school or whatever uh he reads William Blake he's like he's also like parade around his like a side show basically um and it's one of the things uh sorry this is one of the things that nobody likes about William Blake is that he killed a white man yes that's sort of the first like you're already yeah you're my guy here and that is sort of like i think the you know it's enough that he's named William Blake right and that is so significant but then this guy who sort of unwittingly or just like by coincidence embodies like this guy's whole deal nobody's like whole life trajectory which is like i want to kill white guys they fucking suck yeah and also William Blake is number one yes which in and of itself is an interesting sort of uh what's the word conflict you know or not well William Blake an english man himself oh yeah yeah sure um but that's like i don't know that that feels like a little bit of a there's a way to read that where it's like a statement on like to sorry to say it because it's corny transcendent power of art uh yeah yeah i i guess that is like it's like William Blake is my guy and William Blake kills white men this guy is the best yes um couple couple other things about like there's a bunch of like cultural references throughout this and the name talking he who talks loud saying nothing is i guess a reference to a James Brown song called talking loud and saying nothing nice yeah so uh do with that we will yeah uh so uh yeah like throughout this Johnny jibob's character William Blake is like different levels of like uh i guess like tired or dying or whatever like he starts off when he first gets shot he's like very uh like he's like constantly laying down whatever and then you know by the time they're like riding and he's like starting to feel better and then he's walking around he's upright but he's still dying i like the one i mean obviously the one scene he's like uh i was like nobody i want to get the quote right here hold on um do you oh he's like do you know the white man that killed you he asked nobody asks William Blake do you know the white man that killed you and he's like i'm not dead am i and i think is that one he calls like William Blake stupid you might yeah but so uh i i just love that he's like i'm not dead and he's like no he's like actually you're dead yes i'm sorry yes i'm sorry to tell you you just don't know yet um but so anyway they they find these fur trappers out in the woods here there's like they have a campfire going and this is iggy pop Billy Bob Thorne and Jared Harris and they're out there and they're having some stupid fucking conversation uh Billy Bob is like says something about he can't drink whiskey anymore gives him the shits um and nobody is like uh you have to go down there and talk to them it's like i don't think i should do that they seem dangerous and he's like you have to talk to them it's like okay he's like okay how do i get down there you go just go yeah and so he does and it goes like about as bad as you could ask for yeah i mean like yeah these guys are all like they pull it down on them and they're like who are you and he's like i'm just you know traveling or whatever and he starts they're starting talking like do you have any tobacco they all ask he's like no i don't smoke and he's like uh can i have some somebody else is like can i have some of your tobacco he's like i don't have any he's like yeah can i have just a little bit he's like i don't have any i don't smoke don't smoke yes um and then they're on to like his clothes they like his clothes and he pop is wearing a dress yes uh and but all of them like he pop kind of kicks it off where he's like very into the like uh his suit his like city city boy suit he's like i like your suit and jaren harris is like what size shoes are those and yeah they're like sizing him up basically uh billy bob is like i like your hair yeah your hair feels like a girl's hair he's like this and he pulls his and he's like this is like this is like old you know bar and hay i can't do anything i do like billy bob being like uh he's like i actually clean up pretty good myself right it's like that's trying to woo him a little bit um but this quickly devolves into like i saw him first get your hands off him yeah he's like this one's mine i'm like they're just gonna uh they're gonna they're gonna fuck him yeah and then jared harris points at gun at billy bob and ends up he shoots him in the foot which is that that whole thing where he gets shot and then billy bob like doesn't react for a second and he's like god damn it that burns so then he picks up again he's like well now i got to shoot somebody right just the stupidity of it like i have to shoot somebody somebody shot somebody yeah um that's uh what they had to market somebody shoot me as after went off the air yeah uh who shoots oh uh nobody comes out of like the woods and sneaks up on billy bob and like slits his throat yeah pretty good and then yes john yeah well he blake shoots jared harris and then he's able to uh oh nobody picks up the rifle one of the rifles and shoots icky pop um r&p r&p rest icky pop uh they're all flaky yeah they're done um we start seeing wanted posters for nobody right uh no for William Blake yeah um i was looking at the word nobody is i was talking i got my wagerscrows but yeah um this is an issue obviously for William Blake because people know he's on the run but also an issue for three uh bounty hunters for the reason we said right like they're they're like what the fuck he told us we were working exclusively yeah um now i'm not like the now everybody's gonna be going after him right so they're mad about that it's also around this time that the kid right this is named the kid yeah he gets like kind of fed up with this whole thing he's like i fucking hate you guys like you're fucking weird you won't stop talking you fucked your parents and ate them yeah i don't think he does he say it or he like stops just short of saying it yeah yeah he's um but he's like he's like this fucking sucks and they're matted or whatever and then he bends down a drink out of standing of standing puddle which like yeah come on man was it's your first day um and it's cold it's cold like i wouldn't do that if i were you and he's like fuck you cold right cold like no fuck you and he shoots him in the fucking head also a a reference to a William Blake poem oh yeah um there's a uh i don't know if it's the name of the poem proverb befell or something but the line is expect poison from standing water oh yeah there you go um so yeah he does shoot him in the back of the head and uh the Conway is like he was just a kid yeah does he say something like not anymore or something yes yeah yeah it's like that uh and that shot too of just like blood uh sort of spilling into the puddle water yeah oh no what he says is much worse than not anymore he says now he's a Navajo mud toy oh jesus i don't really get what that even means it just sounds bad it sounds bad yeah it might be a slur loss to time it could be yeah who knows but uh yeah so those two ride off and then i think the next time we see them right is like oh well first um we get sort of uh William Blake sort of coming into his own on his hero's journey yeah right where those two marshals two bald guys well oh before that before that they there's a scene between William Blake and nobody where they're um you know nobody is he's you know talking or singing or something and he looks at William Blake and there's like the skull that's like super close yeah he took peyote he says it that's it that's it he took peyote and yeah he's like William Blake's like uh can i have some of that he's like i'm hungry and he's like this is not for you yet um so and he he takes like some sort of an ink or whatever and he like does that sort of zigzag on either side of his on his face on William Blake's face right and now also William Blake is like wearing this like big sort of fur coat right it's like like he said he's coming into his own here um this is also where um i mean nobody takes uh Blake's glasses and puts them on his head and put them on the glasses but then Blake's like i need those to see he's like maybe you'll see better without them yeah and then he also like Blake is like i'm really hungry he's like good like oh yeah like you should be hungry and thirsty for your vision quest yes a vision quest you have to fast in order to see to like the ancient spirits on your vision quest um Dan ever been on a vision quest i have not i've done good uh i've done an escape room no i haven't actually i was trying to think it's almost but that's and i did i did success um did uh have you ever i mean maybe so i've never fasted have you over fasted um like on purpose like intermittent fasting or like for an extended stretch no any sort of extended stretch like they say i've heard of water fasting know about this that if you uh if you basically if you do nothing but take in water basically just drink water with like some electrolytes or whatever but water for seven days no food um your body will start eating all of the damage and broken cells um and uh you know allegedly of course this is like a way that people uh can extend their life like as far as uh like damaged cells and like like cancerous cells and shit like that those are the ones that like kind of go first really i've never heard that um jimmy look it look that up all right that's i've never heard that but i am intrigued uh we should do it for a bonus episode just fast do an episode on day seven we're just like fucking insane yeah just like i have like i have to imagine you're just like so hungry and but your your metabolism is out of control and you just like i don't know if you would be so tired or so like wired wired yeah well we're gonna find out next week fast starts now okay no no food this is me pushing a plate of plate of delicious food away from me a plate of delicious fucking lassie x yeah Tony's macaroni away from my face oh yes we're having HBO for dinner maw can i have HBO at home we have HBO at home and it's show time-shaped pasta or stars it's not that same so so okay so nobody goes away nobody leaves he does leave um he rides off so William Blake he wakes up um oh also one of the things that uh nobody says which i really like is that um uh let me get the keep losing all of the quotes that i want to um quote here well while you're looking for that i have two things to say of one is that nobody's name is also a a reference to a spaghetti western a biscuity western called my name is nobody starring friend of the show and refunda oh um but oh the oh i had a book on well i was just gonna say i really admired the restraint of this movie that they only do like one who's on first style joke with his name oh right where they where he goes to the fur trappers and they're like uh who he was he says i came with nobody i'm with nobody hashtag i'm with nobody i'm with nobody yeah that is good so what's your quote so uh nobody says this to William Blake he says uh you know about the gun he says that weapon will replace your tongue you will learn to speak through it and your poetry will be written with blood and it's just a cool thing to say that is a cool thing to say cool but which it plays into the next scene which so he William Blake wakes up nobody is gone and he's uh he walks off he's like looking for him a little bit and then these two marshals show up these two dinguses wingus and dingus do show up yeah yeah deputy wingus and deputy dingus um and they're they look the same they have like bald heads and mustaches address the same it's kind of funny but uh they they see like the campsite that he was just that they see like oh it's a fresh campfire whatever and and then they see William Blake like coming back over the hill and they're like there he is and one guy points his gun as William Blake like walks like towards him and he's like he asks are you you know are you William Blake and he's like yes and he says do you know my poetry and he shoots like a fucking ventilates his ass he shoots the one guy and then this is also a classic the other guy the like his brain sent his brain sent the signal to shoot before he got shot yes so then after he gets shot and his body is turned by the bullet he shoots his friend who I'm sure is he shoots the wingus wingus dingus wingus wing is um so they're dead and then he uh some other stuff happens some vision quest stuff happens I did not realize that the like people in the trees were supposed to be spirits until reading it after the fact yeah did you clock that yeah because they disappear they do I thought they just like Homer Simpson but they went back into the shrub um but yeah so there's that and then he finds like a dead fallen like a zowide babied sia yes um little baby deer that's been killed shot shot in the neck and he like lays with it and sort of like cradle he's becoming like one with death and the idea of death yeah um this event who's like coming to terms with his own death but just death in general and like so much of this movie obviously there's the Native American sort of spirituality that's going on here but it is this like well death is not the end you know kind of thing sure yes you are dying that is true but that just means you're going to be transitioning over into the spirit realm yeah and I don't know William Blake being like when we first saw him on the train and being like kind of weak and scared of everything and like the whole you know all of this like just being who he was and now having experienced so much death having killed a man himself and that you know goes on to kill more um the idea of death and like becoming one it doesn't it's he's getting a lot more comfortable with the idea right and like the killing of other you know other people after this like there is a you know it's like literal it's literally happening but like it's sort of also the idea that like I don't know I think there's a way to look at this where he's like being he's becoming right he's becoming one with the spirit of death and so he's like shepherding these other people short right like he's uh he's a grim reaper of sorts well yeah well yeah I mean he turns into a he's the folks grim he's the goddamn grim reaper yeah he's a bit of an angel death angel vengeance um yes so he uh the so now the two bounty hunters right uh they find the the dead marshals right and like we said before the one marshal the way that he falls dead in the campfire like the spent campfire whatever it's all these like sticks and things that are like kind of like coming out of his head yeah it halos his head it halos his head it looks like a renaissance painting the coal says it looks like a religious figure yeah and then he steps on it crushes his skull he's like was it was this the kids in the hall right what is this the kids in the hall is this the kids he's crashing you know that you know that bit was the Bruce I think he's a numbers mccollar he was the mark mccinney yeah he's got the mark mccinney and this this is the part when uh the two bounty hunters right off fades the black we hear a gunshot and then the next scene is lance handerson eating so arm man's arm and it looked it's like a skeleton hand with like gristle just the growth yeah and he's picking it out of his teeth oh it's pretty bad it's pretty bad news it's bad news he's so casual about it um not not long after this yeah Blake finds nobody in communion with a beautiful woman I this is so funny though because like I don't know at this point too uh you know like lance handerson killed that one guy and ate him now now uh he laid down with the dead deer uh he saw the spirits on the other realm and he's walking through the woods and he hears this fucking noise it sounds like an animal dying or something and you're like what is this gonna be and then like he finds it and you know it's like it's this big like fur thing and it's moving around he's like and and it turns out to be nobody uh fucking his girlfriend yes and she's passed she she runs off or whatever she does run off they are speaking in a different language I don't know which language but um it's a fight it's like visibly a fight and then she leaves and then he's like all right let's go it's sort of it feels like the conversation was like I have to help this guy you know I have to shepherd him to the other side and she's like you're always doing this you're always shepherding these people to the other side he's like why don't you like any of my friends they continue on and then they find a uh like a trading post here and this is where nobody says like these people are bad they uh they have like blankets that are infected like smallpox and shit yeah and uh yeah he so they both of them well William Blake first he goes inside and he's like poking around and then nobody shows up and he's like can I have some tobacco and he's well from lena and he's like and it's all it's all very religious on malina's end right there's like sure I like the sign on the door that says find your own salvation yes which is like the most american thing I've ever heard it's like get your own yeah and also um bootstrapsy you know yeah so yeah he he lies he's like uh I think I'm out of tobacco friend out tobacco he's like oh I see you know four tens behind you and he's like those are empty and then William Blake walks up and he's like I'd like some tobacco please and he's like I think we have some it kills him twists or whatever yeah whether tobacco is like sold it's like in this like big gross role dog dance like looking rogue um and uh he's like does he say like oh you're William Blake like he knows who William Blake yeah well there are a bunch of posters right outside his shop but he wants his autograph or something he says he wants his autograph as a trick oh okay because as William Blake is going to sign he like tries to pull a gun on him and William Blake stabs him through the hand with his pen yes yeah he stabs with him he gets the drop on this racist piece of shit and he he puts him puts him in the ground make a squink work of us fully bent the wind whistles through him uh another guy shows up and they get that guy too this is also nobody is starting to talk he's like he mentions like like the water mirror that you have to pass through and it's obviously like uh hey frankly reminds me of uh Prince of darkness a little bit that mirror you pass through into the into hell in that case but like sure that watery sort of thing but he's talking about dying crossing over whatever and he's like we need a boat we need a canoe yeah we're gonna need it I like at this point William Blake has gotten so used to like killing people he kills these two guys and he's just like all right let's go oh wait importantly another guy gets him he gets shot in the back yes he does he yeah he's sitting there and somebody does sneak up on him and shoot him in like the arm when it was armed and then yeah he and he shoots that guy too so he gets kind of loaded into the canoe and he's and what is nobody says something like uh you attracted more uh white metal yeah it's like white metal yeah and he's like I seem to be a magnet for it yeah so they go down the river isn't that just such a potent river as a metaphor it's just it's so evocative they're not really even doing anything with it it just like it feels so again constantly yeah I yeah I mean like this portion where they're just like floating down the river and they see like like a burned out like little shack and yeah you see like a village that got torched yeah all that shit and like you have nobody paddling and like William Blake he's like in his like bare coat he's got a hat he's got the paint on his face and his gun is like across his chest like that I could watch this if this scene went on for two hours of them just going down the river and seeing different shit I would love it totally I would have and like just having like fucking Neil Young just plinking away of his guitar please he is plinking and plunking it's true um but eventually they get to um get to like a village I don't know according to Wikipedia at least it's the maka people is the name of the you know the people who run the village um and nobody uh has like a you know he talks to like the people in charge yeah and basically convinces them to give uh Blake funeral rights yes they give him like a big ceremonial boat and they load it up with uh he says what it is it's like cedar or something cedar branches and it's like adorned nicely and Blake's like kind of in and out of consciousness so he sort of like wakes up in this boat yeah all of this stuff is very trippy him being like carried by like nobody carried on his feet basically by nobody through this village and seeing all these faces of these people and it's all you know very sort of a theory on whatever and you like sit some down and he sees like you know if there's like another dead person that they like they're giving him the funeral same kind of deal uh yes and then he wakes up in you know it's a detail I really like it's not just the sewing machine just sitting there yeah it's like what's that doing there I don't know but yeah there was I think it's just like I don't know it's sort of because like it's a big metal machine and it sort of evokes like the reason he came out here in the first place I think it's a big heavy metal machine it also of course evokes a lurid's metal machine music I was yeah I was waiting for that but that's not what I was thinking actually it was the other thing the real thing um so it's just like this and it's interesting too because it's like he was going to this like production right this place of production and the sewing machine is like the end state of that production so it's like his journey and the you know the raw material like they've both ended they both terminated this point yeah and there's like kind of interesting like so I'm sure it like it seems like these these name americans are probably using that sewing machine right sure yeah and like that's you know whatever it's industrialism starting to like infiltrate creep in yeah totally totally um and like seems innocuous like sewing machine good you know helps out with whatever but you know where does it end yeah not good in anyways um in basically every single way so they put uh they put Blake into the boat they put Blake in the boat time to die it's good they have like uh nobody in Blake they have their like sort of goodbyes right and nobody cries at the end of it as as the boat like drifts off into the water I like Blake being like he's like like I guess nobody put tobacco in the boat with him and Blake's like I have some tobacco for you it's like no you need that where you're going he's like I don't smoke you do now everybody's doing everybody in heaven smokes in heaven everybody smokes I hope so yeah I hope in the afterlife uh everybody's puff of puffing yeah smoking nice nice sigs so uh William Blake floating out going he's floating away and with his last little bit of strength he's sort of like looking back at nobody from the shore who's on the shore I mean and then we see fucking Cole the bounty hunter Cole the bounty hunter coming up behind nobody and Cole takes a shot at Blake yes and misses right and then nobody picks up with his gun and they shoot each other dead yeah and it's from so far away I know we're like a hundred yards out it's um yeah also uh something I noticed here a lot of these scenes it's raining and you can't really tell because uh the black and white and the film just doesn't pick up the raindrops yeah but in this scene it is raining and you can tell because of the water you can see all the raindrops hitting the water oh yeah looks really cool yeah it looks great um that scene also where with the fur trappers uh you can see rain in certain certain portions of the frame now where it's like lip where it's lit up yeah I didn't even notice but also like what a cool sort of like ethereal effect that it's like you there's rain hitting the water but you can't see it falling from the sky yes right but that's it that's like that's magic right that's like we have to film right now kind of shit but yeah Blake just dies he's looking up at the sky dying and then he dies and he dies and he dies and that's the movie that's dead man because he's dead he's that's it's good man really really good it's really good this is like I forgot how good this movie was I like this feels like something I should be watching once a year or something you know I'd like to I agree this is like I can very easily see myself like coming back to I like soon even because it's it's a thinker in like a yeah not in a puzzle kind of way in a poem kind of way it's a very beautiful um yeah in a poem way I like when movies are poems yeah and you can like you can just sit with it and you can you can think about it infinitely more interesting oh my god um the sort of refrain that uh nobody has the William Blake line he keeps quoting where he's saying every night and every morning some timisserie were born every morning every night some are born to sweet delight right so it's like this dichotomy of like some some people they live moss other people they're nasty um but I do feel like right the you know nobody and Blake verse like the frickin uh bounty hunters it's that is the dichotomy we're drawing here where it's like they're in verses of each other where like these are men who live for death versus like living men who live for death and a dead man who who wants life right it's like these inverse things and then it did also make me think of uh tombstone when he's talking when uh oh huckleberry's talking about uh what's the name Johnny Ringo oh when Johnny Ringo's talking about death no when Doc's talking about Johnny Ringo and he's like oh it is like what's he you know what's he want vengeance for he's like being born yeah yeah same sort of thing it's like some people are fucking miserable man yeah truly some people are fucking miserable um they want to eat people uh you want to fuck their parents yeah I want to do whatever but guess what this poem ends uh he says God appears and God is light to those poor souls who dwell at night so it's like uh but but does a human form display to those who dwell in realms a day so it's like there's it is sort of saying like um we all end it's a little bit we all end up in the same place it's not full not that exactly yeah um it is kind of like olefmas that's sort of the theme of this poem olefmas I want to suck the marrow out of life as fourth meal I want to suck the marrow out of life Cole uh in this movie he does he's like the marrow out of that guy out of the one guy and that lady sucks the marrow out of gibby keel very kind all right letterbox letterbox dot com slash keemie power you can find out what kind of how much we liked it just before the episode goes out five stars and alike for me yeah easy five stars it's great it's really great it's really really great um yeah everything every aspect of it it just fucking it's kind of it's perfect it's funny you know weird dark way it has like it's yeah it just I don't know the music the score the all like everything with nobody is all of his lines all of his dialogue is perfect yeah um and then yeah all of this stuff about the meditation on death it's great I couldn't agree more I have an idea for a review okay I uh is it back you be no it's not um I was gonna say this is the film that inspired me uh to write a screenplay or to write it I'll say to write a movie where David Thulis plays a character named Mike Campbell who is the guitarist from Tom Petty the Heartbreaker does that scan with like David Thulis is like a Jared Harris style oh is that I didn't understand why you're talking okay I'll change it to Jared Harris that's that scans a little cleaner doesn't have to be this at all either it's so fun like seeing Jared Harris I feel like he didn't pop up on my radar until I saw him in Batman same yeah and it's crazy how much less British he looks when he's young yeah there's something that happens to British guys yeah they get more Brit yeah he's actually very handsome when he's younger sure but then you but then you're British but then you're British and you get older oh you'll be a yeah he's great though love my man man so unless you can top my bad idea with something about Gibby getting dumb uh no no this movie is about I mean big end little no no I have nothing else that's just this is the movie where how you spell is it Haynes eight like H A Y and yes right yes this is the movie where Gibby Haynes gets his hog washed gets domed that's his hog washed and that's it that's that's dead man that's a dead Friday we're we're coming at you with the quick and the dead yeah different came out the same year though yeah Sam Raney so yeah I think if I'm remembering correctly it probably just seems like Lance Hendrickson walked off of one set onto the other one he may have been pulling double duty he may have I don't even know if he changes his costume yeah I was gonna say sure Lance you can keep your costume I guess yeah that may have been like a cost-saving measure on dead man could be yeah he's just casting only people who are filming westerns already that very yeah so that's a fun one we're gonna fun talking about it yeah that's that's our um was it uh directors with uh one-off westerns yeah featuring Lance Hendrickson featuring Lance Hendrickson that was very important to us in programming this miniseries yes yes all right so until Friday at patreon that comes like can be pod whereas I like to call it p.c skmp Jesus and the s is for slash and savings uh I'm Dan I'm Rob happy trails
