Dead Reckoning for the Soul

from The Salty Pastor · host Dr. Douglas Peake

Worship has two dimensions that most people keep separate when they were meant to work together. The first is daily life. Paul's instruction that whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of Jesus — isn't about religious phrases, it's about living in such a way that your decisions, your priorities, and what you invest yourself in are genuinely about something beyond yourself. A couple who appeared strong and active in their faith told the story of how an affair nearly destroyed their marriage. The wife said it plainly: turns out we weren't as strong as we thought. Mostly because everything we did, we were doing for ourselves. The second dimension is creative expression — and it's broader than most people assume. It's singing, yes. But it's also playing an instrument, organizing something, making people feel welcome, giving a gift, serving quietly in ways nobody notices. Don't use your personal style preferences as an excuse to withhold that. Whatever your form of expression, you were meant to let the gratitude you have for Jesus well up and spill onto the people around you. And then there's community worship, which Hebrews says not to forsake — not as a habit to maintain, but because it functions as dead reckoning for the soul. Out at sea, navigation depends on knowing exactly where you are before you can set a course. Community worship does that. It says: this is where I am. This is where Jesus is in relation to me. From that position, the questions that seemed murky start to have answers. Not because he reveals more information — but because you can finally see clearly from where you're standing. Do you experience your daily work and decisions as an expression of worship — or are they separate from your spiritual life? What would integration actually look like for you? 2. Think of someone you know whose daily life reflects their connection to Jesus. What do you notice about them that's different? 3. Is there a pattern between the times you've pulled away from community worship and times when your sense of direction in life has gotten fuzzy?
