hi there and welcome back to the career pivot accelerator the podcast for professionals who feel stuck in their roles but still believe they're meant for more i'm your host peggy mcknight your personal career coach and secret weapon to your successful career if you've ever felt like you're working your tail off but not moving forward or if you've hit that frustrating plateau where your efforts don't seem to be translating into recognition promotions or new offers then this is the space for you i'm here to help you build better working relationships speak up with confidence and grow into the leader you were born to be without burnout blame or having to become someone you're not today we are going into a power pack episode to help you rebuild momentum and discipline not just motivation especially as we roll into another month i call this one from deadline to discipline why structure still wins in business all right my friend let's be real for a minute well we're always real but this time i want to talk about remembering that feeling when you finally left school behind what a relief it was right no more dragging heavy books around no more aching shoulders no more late night cramming for exams no more teachers hovering over your shoulder it felt like the weight had been lifted and we were free at last but here's the funny thing school didn't exactly prepare us for what life was really going to be like because as much as we thought we were done with pressure deadlines and structure life has a way of handling us even tougher assignments only this time the stakes aren't grades there are careers our paychecks and our reputations if i could go back and tell my younger self one thing it would be this pay attention to how you study how you focus how you show up because those skills matter far more than you realize you might be thinking now okay peggy hold on i didn't come here for a trip down memory lane about school i left that years ago thank god but here's the twist the very same structure we once couldn't wait to escape is the exact thing that can set us up for success today deadlines time blocks study sessions they trained us to show up and do the work the problem is somewhere along the way when the pressure stopped coming from teachers and stopped being written in red ink we started negotiating with ourselves snoozing alarms pushing tasks off waiting for the last minute burst of adrenaline only to crash and burn afterwards does any of this resonate and sound familiar today we're going to unpack why consistency does excel over urgency why structure is still the quiet champion of career success and how you can build self-imposed systems that get you seen trusted and promoted without stress so if you're ready my friend let's dive in remember those school days when a due date wasn't negotiable essays had to be in on friday pop quizzes just were something that just always kept you on edge group projects had a presentation date miss it and you failed full stop end of non-negotiable we learned to associate deadlines with consequences but more importantly we learned to organize our time prepare and perform even if we stayed up way too late the night before fast forward to our professional lives especially in the finance world and deadlines haven't gone away they haven't gone anywhere they're still there we've just rebranded them month and close audit cycles project milestones budget timelines you name it they're there but here's the kicker we often treat external deadlines as urgent and internal ones as optional why because there's no one marking our paper no teacher taking attendance no detention no going to the principal's office but this is exactly where we lose our edge and our leadership disability in high-performing careers the people who rise aren't just those who meet deadlines it's those who set their own and stick to them these are the ones managers trust without second guessing these are the colleagues who get invited to lead not just execute and the best part you don't need to work harder you just need better boundaries more discipline with yourself okay let's talk psychology for a second or maybe a few seconds our brain craves structure especially when things feel uncertain or uncomfortable deadlines give the brain a container a place to focus energy make decisions faster and stop overthinking when you create a deadline even one that's self-imposed and perceived you activate the part of your brain that prioritizes tasks you send a message to yourself and others this matters and here's the thing when we start honoring the promises we make to ourselves something wild happens self-trust skyrockets you stop waiting for the pressure you become the pressure and not in a toxic hustle culture kind of way but in a competent aligned and i've got this way especially if you are having the self-imposed pressure you're making it a bit of fun a bit of a challenge to see how well you can do at something make it a bit of a game inside you not with your colleagues but with yourself your own kind of like self-competition or self-imposed structure this is a form of leadership you become someone others can count on because you've built the muscle to count on yourself and believe me that does not go unnoticed look i'm not here to shame the adrenaline junkies in the room we've all had those moments where we pulled off a miracle in the 11th hour and impressed everyone but time after time if you are living on that edge where you are just pushing yourself in the 11th hour all the time it gets exhausting well it gets burnout as well but i can tell you a secret leadership isn't impressed by your chaos it's impressed by your calm it's impressed when you show up with prepared slides instead of excuses or fumbling around and looking very disorganized when you anticipate the ask instead of reacting in a panic when you deliver early not just on time because you had a structure that worked for you in the finance world especially where timing accuracy and risk management are crucial being the chaotic creative won't get you promoted it might get you praise for that moment in time but it won't get you power what gets you promoted is reliability and that's built through structure not magic so how do we take this from theory to action in your daily life here's the truth there is no one-size-fits-all system there are a few golden rules and boundaries to definitely guide you but ultimately the structure is yours to create the key is to build a structure that matches your energy patterns your responsibilities and your career goals start by time blocking like a cfo not a college student don't just react to your calendar design it set recurring ceo time each week to review your goals plans and reflect batch similar tasks if you can to reduce switching those efforts leave buffer space for unexpected items but treat it like sacred space not overflow next create anchor deadlines for your deliverables and hold yourself to them before your boss has to if your report is due friday deliver a draft wednesday get feedback polish it lead the timeline that shows leadership that builds visibility and that earns trust finally create rituals not just routines anchor your days with intention start with a question like who needs to hear from me today or what can i deliver early this week that would ease someone else's burden that's how leaders think i'd like to give you an example from one of my clients we're going to call her casey for protection purposes and anonymity um casey was a senior financial analyst smart sharp as a tack but constantly overwhelmed she relied on bursts of effort constant working on the weekends when it was her day off she would often be working even though her out-of-office sign was on everyone knew she was working because they could tell by the out-of-office light she would often pull all-nighters before budget reviews as well last-minute spreadsheet updates before leadership meetings chaos was an understatement her work was technically brilliant but no one saw the sweat and chaos behind it even though some may have suspected it they turned a blind eye because well she got results and guess what she kept getting passed over for promotions she couldn't understand this when she came to me she was absolutely exhausted and burnt out she didn't want to become the boss but she did want to be respected as someone who could lead a team and drive results the breakthrough came when she realized her just-in-time strategy was hurting her reputation she looked scattered disorganized chaotic always pulling in people in meetings so she could share her work to make sure it was correct she just needed that validation people didn't trust that she'd deliver without panic her brilliance was invisible because the structure was missing we worked together we built a weekly framework for her she planned each week in advance block time for deep work set internal deadlines ahead of the real ones and implemented a weekly progress share so she could keep stakeholders in the loop a year later her manager praised her transformation she was put on a succession plan and she got a raise out of it without even asking for it not because she became someone different but because she added discipline to her talent now not every organization can afford to put their staff on a succession plan if you take nothing else from today's episode let it be this structure is not punishment it is self-respect it's not about rigidity it's about alignment when you build systems that reflect your priorities protect your energy give yourself your boundaries and showcase your reliability you become unstoppable you earn trust without trying you stand out without shouting and that's what leadership is built on if this episode struck a chord and you're ready to step into a more empowered season of your career i have a free resource just for you it's called the mid-year reset journal what to let go of and where to focus next this beautifully designed guide walks you through what's holding you
