Welcome back to Midnight Movie Distillery where we watch the movies you've heard about… and drink the whiskey that helps us stay out of the swamp. Tonight we're reviewing Hungry — James Nunn's Louisiana-bayou creature feature about tourists on a swamp tour looking for a fabled monster alligator who instead find a rampaging hippopotamus lurking beneath the water. Yes: a hippo. In Louisiana. Which sounds absurd but is actually a legitimate real-world story — exotic pets escape into the American South every so often, and hippos kill roughly 500 people a year in Africa, more than lions and crocodiles combined. Madison Davenport leads. Joaquim de Almeida (Fast Five, Clear and Present Danger) is inexplicably in the cast. Austin Wintory — best known for scoring the video game Journey — wrote the music. First theatrical hippo horror movie in memory, and probably a while. Paired with it: Sazerac 6 Year Rye Whiskey — the New Orleans workhorse rye — plus, since we were doing Louisiana, an actual Sazerac cocktail made with it as our second pour. Two rounds because the movie earned it. We stayed close on the rye. The cocktail is where things got interesting — one of us was ordering another; one of us was walking away from the first.
