Deborah Slaner Larkin -- "I wanted to be Billie Jean King"

from Zestful Aging

2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. For those who are unfamiliar, TITLE IX is a Federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sex or gender in any educational institution that receives federal funding. Previous to this law, universities had club sports for women, but they did not receive funding or support. Deborah Slaner Larkin is the former CEO of the Women's Sports Foundation, Founded by Billie Jean King in 1974. Their mission is to strengthen and expand participation and leadership opportunities through research, advocacy, community programming and a wide variety of collaborative partnerships. Deborah also served on the President's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports. During her tenure at the President's Council, she co-managed the critically acclaimed President's Council Report: Physical Activity & Sport in the Lives of Girls: Physical & Mental Health Dimensions from an Interdisciplinary approach. I met her at the National Senior Games last month, where she went on to win the Doubles championship.
