Debra Gonsalves - Disability changes lives

from Who moved my sushi? Hosted by TEDxSeaPoint

Once we were a family, enjoying a Birthday Party like anyone else. The next morning our Father could not stand up and our lives were forever changed. Living with someone wit a disability has motivated us to change the way we see disability. The Ocean View Work Group, founded in 1972 in a derelict building in Ocean View, which is situated approximately 35km from Cape Town by one courageous social worker has created a support system where people with Down syndrome or disabilities can find support in a poor and struggling community. Today the workgroup, which began with just six members, now services 60 adults with disabilities. Members learn valuable skills through their involvement with these contracts and some are able to be absorbed into the open labor market thanks to the skills acquired. A video of this talk
