Decadence and Disarray: Emperor Elagabalus
from Rotten to the Core · host Joshua Waters
Let springtime reign as we revel in the indulgences of Emperor Elagabalus, the joie de vivre in imperial excess... In the annals of forgotten rulers, there exists a tale of youthful recklessness and extravagant folly. Young Elagabalus, an emperor in their tender teens, turned the Roman Empire into a grand theatre of youthful rebellion and unchecked excess. This sovereign of scandal, adored by some, abhorred by others, faced an ultimate erasure—a futile attempt to scrub their delightful decadence from memory. This capricious monarch teaches us the timeless truth that exuberance and extravagance, unchecked, can lead even those crowned in glory towards darkness and doom. What this episode covers
We’ve been getting kinda heavy with our last few Rotten lessons. This one is more lighthearted. Rotten comes in many shapes and sizes and doesn’t always have to mean death and destruction. Oftentimes in can be things that are done in excess that make one forgo their responsibilities. Our topic is all about Emperor Elagabalus and how their lifestyle caused an attempt to erase them from history. I mean, would any of us be prepared to rule an empire in our teens? I would have done similar rotten things too! Support the show on Patreon!
