Deep Dive into All of Grace: An Earnest Word for Those Who Are, by Grace, Seeking Salvation by Charles Spurgeon - Faith, What Is It?

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Saving faith, as described by Charles Spurgeon, is the simple means by which salvation is received through grace. It is composed of three interconnected components: knowledge, belief, and trust.Knowledge is the essential first step. You must hear and learn about God, the gospel, and crucially, Christ Jesus, His nature, and especially His substitutionary sacrifice. Knowing that Christ was "made sin for us" to reconcile us to God is foundational. Faith is not a blind leap; it begins with this necessary understanding.Following knowledge is belief, which is the acceptance of these known truths as certain. This involves believing the gospel is true, that Christ's sacrifice for sin is complete, and that God's witness about His Son is sure. This is an advance towards faith, but not yet saving faith itself. The final and vital component is trust. Called the "lifeblood of faith," there is no saving faith without it. Trust is the active, personal commitment and reliance on Christ. It's defined as "recumbency," meaning leaning upon Christ, casting yourself upon Him, and resting your full weight on the "Rock of Ages." It means believing Christ's promises and then personally expecting Him to save you by leaving yourself entirely in His hands.Saving faith fundamentally fixates on Christ's substitutionary work and the act of personally trusting Him. Exercising this trust results in everlasting life and freedom from condemnation. Spurgeon strongly emphasizes that the key is not merely understanding these components, but actively doing the trusting.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
