Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - An Account of Several Remarkable Individuals, Who Were Martyred in Different Parts of Italy, on Account of Their Religion

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

In 16th-century Italy, individuals who embraced the reformed religion faced severe persecution from the Church of Rome and the Pope. People like John Mollius, a professor, and Algerius, a student, were targeted for becoming zealous Protestants after reading reformed treatises and for preaching doctrines contrary to the tenets of the Church of Rome, particularly by expounding the Gospel according to its purity. Mollius specifically detailed his differing opinions on numerous points, including justification by faith, transubstantiation, and the infallibility of the Pope. Others were persecuted for overtly rejecting Catholic symbols, such as Francis Gamba calling a cross a "senseless stick" or a young Englishman who trampled on the host, denouncing it as idolatry. The methods of persecution were brutal and varied. Individuals were apprehended, held in close confinement, and given the stark choice to recant or be burnt. Those who refused faced torture of "exemplary severity." Executions included burning at the stake, hanging followed by burning the body to ashes, boring through the tongue, and public mutilation like cutting off a hand. A particularly horrifying account details the systematic throat-cutting of seventy Protestants one by one in a dungeon. Despite these cruelties, the sources emphasize the remarkable steadfastness of the martyrs, who often met death with patience, piety, and a refusal to abandon their beliefs or accept Catholic rites.
