Deep Dive into Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin - To Know the Purpose for Which Christ Was Sent by the Father, and What He Conferred upon Us, We Must Look Above All at Three...

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

To understand Christ and find a firm basis for salvation, it is essential to grasp his threefold office: Prophet, King, and Priest. These roles were enjoined upon him by the Father, and knowing their purpose is crucial. As Prophet, Christ is the fullness and culmination of all divine revelation. He brought the perfect doctrine, making an end to all previous prophecies. In him are hidden all the treasures of knowledge and understanding, signifying that outside Christ, there is nothing worth knowing for our salvation. He reveals God's grace and provides the wisdom necessary for heavenly benefits.Christ's Kingly office is fundamentally spiritual. It is not of this world and does not focus on earthly prosperity but on eternal salvation and spiritual blessings. This eternal kingship secures the perpetuity and safety of the church against all enemies, including the devil. For individuals, it inspires hope for blessed immortality, provides strength against spiritual foes, and bestows spiritual riches like righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Believers, empowered by his Spirit, can struggle fearlessly and endure hardships, knowing their King will never leave them destitute and will lead them to triumph and union with God.As Priest, Christ's primary purpose is to reconcile humanity to God. Because sin barred access to God and provoked his wrath, an expiation was necessary. Christ achieved this through the sacrifice of his death, blotting out guilt and making satisfaction for sins. This priestly work is the central point on which our whole salvation turns. Christ is an everlasting intercessor, through whom believers obtain God's favor, gain trust in prayer, and experience peace of conscience. Through his holiness, believers are made holy and acceptable to God, even becoming companions in this great office, able to offer prayers and praise.Together, these three offices encompass Christ's saving work, providing believers with knowledge, security, empowerment, reconciliation, and hope for eternal life.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
