Across various cultures, there's often an implicit agreement to dehumanize neighboring communities. These jokes, while seemingly harmless, subtly reinforce the dehumanization of 'the other.'The Role of HistoryHistorical events like Manifest Destiny during colonial times used dehumanization to justify the displacement of people from their lifelong homes, illustrating how deeply these attitudes are embedded in our societies.Breaking the CycleTo combat dehumanization, we must start by addressing its most innocuous forms. Though I still remember those North Dakota jokes ready for telling, by refraining from sharing them, I recognize the absurdity of letting imaginary lines dictate our perceptions of intelligence or worth.
