Deliberate, Dedicated Rest - Deuteronomy 14:22-16:17
from Faithful to the End Hosted by Graceway Church of Michiana
In the next section of Deuteronomy, Moses addresses issues related to the Sabbath command. He calls the people to intentionally focus their attention of revering and delighting in Yahweh, as they stop to commemorate his sovereign provision and ever-present care for their needs throughout the wilderness. The Sabbath command in Exodus calls for the intentional and necessary rhythms that should characterize our lives. The restatement of the Sabbath command in Deuteronomy reminds the people that Yahweh delivered them from the bondage of Egypt. As believers, we too should have appropriate rhythms in live and celebrate the deliverance of God through Jesus and his death on the cross for us. What a great gift to us, and the way we receive it and respond to it is essential. As believers, we must take time to rest, revering and delighting in Jesus regularly. Deuteronomy is one of the most significant books in our OT, but one that is often not addressed. Throughout Deuteronomy, Moses will challenge Israel over and over again, to hear the word of Yahweh, and then, to heed it in obedience. Deuteronomy displays the character and attributes of Yahweh in numerous ways, it especially emphasizes the love of Yahweh poured out on Israel. Deuteronomy ultimately sets a choice before us, a choice to prioritize and follow Yahweh, to be right with him through Jesus alone.
