Delivering Happiness

If your goal in life is to be happy, I hate to break it to you, but your life is going to be pretty f*cked up. Because happiness isn’t goal. It’s a feeling. And feelings are not permanent. They shift. They change. They’re always in motion. So if the goal is a thing that doesn’t stick, I’m always going to be in some state of dissatisfaction, of failure. Perhaps a bit ironic a view from someone whose main investor in her business, Tony Hsieh, wrote a book called “Delivering Happiness.”. Truth is, Tony and his “goal” are the perfect example of just how twisted and wrong it is to believe that happiness is the goal. He sought it. He struggled for it. In the end, the inability to find it, to be lonely, isolated and utterly cut off amidst being surrounded by an army of people, was a big part of what drove his death. Don’t worry, this week’s podcast isn’t a macabre view of death, rather it’s a view of how by paying attention to our dogs, we can get the view of happiness that can stick, that CAN serve as a path to a happier life.
