Demi's Story

Demi, a 24-year-old graduate from Birmingham Erdington, wanted to become a teacher in one of Britain's most deprived areas where schools desperately need qualified staff. But when she looked into teacher training, she discovered that HM Treasury and the Department for Education had slashed bursaries for her subject area, despite critical shortages across the West Midlands. The classrooms were there, the students needed teachers, and Demi was ready to serve her community. What blocked her wasn't a lack of resources or capacity, but a political choice by central government to cap spending as though they must find money rather than create it. This episode explores how Westminster's artificial budget constraints keep willing educators out of the classroom while children's futures hang in the balance.
