Demons and the End of Marriage: 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

from Fr. Brian Soliven Sermons · host brian

Jesus couldn't be more clear: we're all locked in spiritual warfare. He tells us bluntly in Luke 22:31, "Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail..." The name "devil" itself, is derived from the Greek work diabolos, meaning "to throw apart, to scatter." Our true enemy seeks to divide our churches, our families, our relationships, and most especially, to keep us away from God himself. Marriage, on the other hand, is brilliantly revealed as the antithesis to the devils plan. Husband and wife are called to witness to Jesus' own unifying love for his body, the Church (See Ephesians 5). That is why in this Sunday's Gospel, Christ baffles the Sadducees and teaches that marriage is no longer needed in Heaven. The perfect union that marriage is meant to point to has been realized. God and humanity has been reconciled. Our holy communion is finally complete.  --- Help Spread the Good News --- Father Brian’s homilies are shared freely thanks to generous listeners like you. If his words have blessed you, consider supporting this volunteer effort. Every gift helps us continue recording and sharing the hope of Jesus—one homily at a time.
