He notes that while our spirits can be perfect, our souls can be burdened with fleshly desires. As believers, we are called to renew our minds with God's word so that our souls can achieve the same perfect state as our spirits. He further teaches that revelational knowledge consists of insights revealed by God the Father to our spirits, which then passes through our souls, where we often misinterpret them. He points out that God's word is what separates the soul from the spirit, encouraging us to exercise our discernment to differentiate good from evil, as well as be able to interpret correctly all that God reveals to us.  Joseph reminds us that those who are carnally minded will experience death, while those who are spiritually minded will experience life and peace.
