Most people have no understanding how our mental health impacts our physical health. The body is a sophisticated mechanism and, at all times, it must stay balanced to be healthy. This is not only physical balance (rest, sleep, food) but psychological balance through emotions, thoughts and feelings. The physical body is cued by the mind. Many times when the mind is not rational, the body goes into fight or flight which eventually weakens the body, opening up an opportunity for disease and illness. Guilt, worry and fear are harmful to the body and difficult for the body to hold. They can wreak havoc on the digestive system, the heart and the stomach. When we feel uncomfortable in a situation, our tendency is to go to the mind for help. Yet, the mind is not insightful and is often irrational. Religion or spirituality, in general, helps people let go of worry and give it to a higher power. This act of surrendering will relieve the nervous system and ultimately the physical body. All illnesses and diseases have a history that begins in the nervous system. Thoughts trigger emotions and emotions drive the nervous system.
