Denver Zoo’s Wildlife Vet Secrets | Spokane News

Step into the wild world of veterinary medicine at the Denver Zoo, where tigers, bears, and elephants get top-tier care rivaling human hospitals. With CT scanners, X-rays, and even mobile imaging for giants too big to fit inside, vets tackle everything from vaccines to oncology — often without sedation thanks to deep animal trust. Led by head vet Jimmy Johnson, who thrives on daily chaos and variety, the team combines tech with intuition: when machines can’t see all, they watch behavior, run blood tests, and rely on animal care staff to spot the first signs. It’s a high-stakes, hands-on collaboration where innovation meets compassion — because every patient matters, no matter how large or fierce.
