Episode 89: Depeche Mode – Some Great Reward (1984) Part 3

In the United States, the unofficial end to summer is here, and so is the end of Brian and Sarah's discussion of Some Great Reward. The fourth album by Depeche Mode is about to celebrate its 35th anniversary, and our hosts have very much enjoyed taking a fond look back at it.

Part 3 –Track by Track, continued

Before getting back into the song discussion, there are some voicemails from listeners to share from locations across the globe. Then it's back to Some Great Reward. There are only two more songs on the album to talk about, but our hosts still have plenty to say! One of the songs is one of the few Alan Wilder-penned works in the Depeche Mode catalogue, and Sarah talks about why that was the case. The hosts also get into a discussion about English grammar, which threatens to distract Brian from the topic at hand. Thankfully, they get back on track to talk about the album closer and its video.

Part 4 – Extra Credit

In a contrast to some album reviews where there is no Extra Credit section, there are two topics addressed in this Extra Credit section. First, Brian talks about "The World We Live in and Live in Hamburg," the first Depeche Mode live concert performance released on video. He shows off his old VHS tape of the concert (only to Sarah, of course, but she confirms he does so), talks about its importance in his life, and also explains why this concert has not seen a re-release onto newer video formats.

Then, Sarah goes over the two B-sides associated with this album: "In Your Memory" and "(Set Me Free) Remotivate Me." She reminds the listeners that one of these songs was also mentioned in Episode 50, where the hosts discussed "Some Great B-Sides" by Depeche Mode. She shares her thoughts on both songs and declares her preference, with Brian chiming in as well.

Part 5 – Final Review and Rating

Brian goes first with his review and rating, and he is surprisingly brief. But throughout the three episodes, he has made it quite clear just how important this album is to him and what an impact it made on his life, so this is more a confirmation of what is probably already known. Sarah also explains that this was a very important album for her as well, but because of the timing of when she was introduced to it, the impact on her is slightly different than it was for Brian. She hems and haws a bit when it comes to her rating, but finally settles on a number, of which Brian heartily approves.
