Deprescribing #13 Healing Acid Reflux

from Deprescribing Pharmacist · host Dr Leyla Ali

Researchers estimate about 20% of the population struggle with acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Medications for acid reflux like omeprazole (Prilosec) and esomeprazole (Nexium) are very accessible as they are available by prescription, as well as over the counter, and are usually covered by insurance. But are these safe to take long term? What natural or holistic remedies are available to treat acid reflux? Acid reflux medications work by reducing acid in the stomach which can suppress the symptoms and make you feel better. But our bodies need acid in the stomach to break down food. When there is no acid then you can have problems breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, as well as other problems with digestion. The commonly prescribed medications for acid reflux can suppress your symptoms and make you feel better, but can set you up for long-term health problems. We discuss the problems with long-term use of acid reflux medications, and simple ways to heal acid reflux naturally. We are doing a weekly Deprescribing class to help people find better solutions for their health. We have a weekly topic or guest speakers. Join live on Mondays at 11AM PT / 2PM EST Deprescribing: to taper or stop medications with the intention to achieve improved health outcomes.
