depression vs. Depression

Depression is like love in the sense that we use both words interchangeably to mean different things. Love can refer to the love your wife or the love of a hamburger. We inherently know that they're two different things, or at least assume so, but with depression we often don't realize how that can confused for something else entirely. I affectionately called these differences little "d" depression and big "D" depression. The little describes our every day neurosis that we can get into when we're not taking care of our bodies and our minds. Big D depression is often the result of avoiding that management work that needs to be done. The way chemicals work in our mind can often define how or when that manifests for us, but for the most part, that average person who isn't experiencing chemical challenges can stave off depression of both kinds with self-care and heading towards their problems instead of avoiding them. Big D depression can be much more tricky to manage and typically involves some medication or clinical support.
