A 48-year-old man from Hancock, Brian P. Conrad, was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Leola, Adams County, after a 911 call reported a neighbor waving a gun. The deputy and a Rome officer ordered Conrad to drop the weapon, but he refused, re-entered his yard, then returned armed and walked toward the deputy—prompting the fatal shot. EMS arrived quickly, but Conrad died at the scene. His handgun was found beside him. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office leads the investigation, with assistance from other counties, before the case moves to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office.
