Derek Notman: A Philosopher's Perspective on Navigating Fear

from The Good Life with Michele Lamoureux · host Michele Lamoureux, Derek Notman

Fear can be overwhelming and trigger anxiety. How can you navigate fear so that you are no longer running away from it, but actually sit with the feelings it brings up? Our guest, Derek Notman, philosopher, movement expert, and Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner takes us on an introspective journey on how to manage fear by inviting it in instead of running away from it. We go deep in this conversation and I hope you find it interesting. This is not intended to be advice for dealing with mental health issues. This is a podcast which is for informational and entertainment purposes only. Anything dealing with your mental or physical health should be discussed with your trusted healthcare provider. WHAT WE DISCUSS: 1️⃣ How to manage fear and anxiety. 2️⃣ How the belief of separation is the root of our suffering. 3️⃣ How awareness arises. 4️⃣ The positive impact Jin Shin Jyutsu can have on the body, mind and spirit. 5️⃣ How fear isn't the problem, it is avoiding feeling it that causes the discomfort. 6️⃣ The power of listening and stilling our bodies and minds, and more. ABOUT OUR GUEST For over three decades, Derek has dedicated his life to  the study of physical culture and philosophy. This pursuit has led him all over the world including time living in China and South East Asia, studying with traditional masters of martial, movement and healing arts. Derek always sought to extract the essence of the traditions while connecting the common elements. Despite the uniqueness of each art and human form, there is a commonality to being in a body and so themes emerge. He has made it his life's work, to investigate and understand these themes and share them with others in a paradigm of traditional wisdom through embodied practice.
