Derwin James Rises to No. 2 in ESPN Safety Rankings

The Los Angeles Chargers safety, Derwin James, recently earned the number two spot on ESPN’s annual list of the premier players at his position. This ranking reflects the high regard NFL coaches, scouts, and executives hold for James following several seasons of elite on-field performance and consistent health. Known for his exceptional versatility, he is the only league defender to record significant playtime across multiple defensive units, including safety and outside linebacker. Head coach Jim Harbaugh praised James as a primary tone setter for the roster, highlighting his leadership and infectious competitive spirit. Statistical highlights from his most recent campaign further cement his reputation as a dynamic playmaker capable of impacting both pass coverage and backfield pressure. Moving forward into 2026, the veteran remains a cornerstone of the defense under a new coordinator and a revamped coaching staff.
