Après le succès considérable du premier rallye Oasis-Paris-Dakar, SONAUTO (Importateur exclusif PORSCHE en France de l’époque) songe à engager une Porsche pour la seconde édition, en janvier 1980. Mais, décidé dans l’urgence, le projet avorte, même si sur certaines pré-listes, on aperçoit déjà une Porsche 924 « SAFARI » dans les participants potentiels.
