Desotos Restaurant Ghost

from Giving up the Ghost · host J. N. Flamand

ON this week’s Episode Jas and Sher, our Audio Curators, take a deep, deep historic research dive but find they are missing about 20-30 years on a famous building in the heart of downtown Winnipeg – 171 McDermott Ave, previously known as Owens St before the turn of the century. More commonly known as De Sotos – this location has seen its share of changes over the last century but most recently in the last 30 – 40 years had become a nightspot staple also referred to as Cheaters, Lock Stock & Barrel, Johnny G’s and now as The Dogwood Café. Once among printers row, this building at 171 McDermott Ave, located in the Exchange District holds a lot of mysteries, as well as stories handed down from generation to generation about the young dancer who died in its elevator shaft while the building was a dance hall the 1920s. Many employees christened the Ghost as ‘Margaret’ – was that out of reference or did someone know of the origins to the true hauntings? There’s nothing documented on this address, but a location this old is certain to hold some mystery – Jas and Sher are yet to uncover what was in that location prior to 1921.
