In this episode of the ChurchNext podcast talk about developing a rule of life. The Christian rule of life, as a concept, has an unfortunate name. The word "rule" for many people, suggests an unpleasant need to do one thing when they'd rather do another. Most people don't voluntarily seek new restrictions or invoke potential negative consequences in lives that already have plenty of demands. Hillary suggests thinking of a rule of life as a trellis -- something helpful and supportive that guides our growth in the direction that we and God think best. Hillary asks us to focus, not on what we should do, but on what we want. What are we tempted to do? What are the deepest desires of our hearts? What visions of the future make us excited to think about them and inspire us to move forward? We'll hear Hillary’s insight on how to listen to God's voice in ideas that excite and inspire us as we build a rule of life. The best way to maintain a rule of life is to keep it fresh and consider ways that it can grow with us. Hillary talks about incorporating a limited number of elements that excite us and make us want to keep going. She teaches us about flexibility and using the community to keep our rule of life active and engaged for the long term.
