The former commander of the Bosnian-Serb army was convicted by a United Nations court for the massacre at Srebrenica in 1995 in which men under his command slaughtered 8,000 Bosniak Muslims. His team seeks acquittal, but the prosecution wants to prove that Mr Mladic was responsible for genocide elsewhere in Bosnia. More than 25 years after the end of the war, there are now two Mr Mladics: the man and the myth. Many Serbs see him as a saintly defender of his people. Those he fought see him as an incarnation of evil. This is a poisonous division.
