That results in higher prices, less innovation and less growth than there would be otherwise. Today the Biden administration will take one small step to boost competition when the Federal Trade Commission votes to reinstate “prior approval”. This is a rule the agency ditched in 1995 that requires companies flagged for anti-competitive deals to notify it of any planned mergers and acquisitions. Lina Khan, a legal scholar who chairs the FTC, has the task of enforcing antitrust law. She is particularly worried that big tech is reducing rivalry in the market. More enforcement is already under way. Mr Biden signed an executive order this month that seeks to crack down on the ways businesses stifle competition. Almost immediately, the FTC reportedly opened an investigation into Amazon’s $8.5bn acquisition of MGM, a film studio.
