An index of key agricultural commodities by Bloomberg is 57% higher than it was a year ago. The surge is partly due to demand. China has been splurging on imports since losing much of its pork to swine flu. Economies, and restaurants, reopening mean more consumption of animal products, which require more grain to produce. There are supply factors too, including droughts in North and South America, more expensive oil (meaning that foodstuffs have been diverted to make biofuels) and snags in supply-chains. Economists worry about the effect on inflation; others warn of increased hunger. Luckily, some pressures are likely to abate soon. Harvest forecasts in key producing countries look good; China’s larders are filling up again. In the meantime the giant commodities traders that source, store and ship foodstuffs around the world are having a field day. ADM and Bunge, two of the world’s largest, report earnings this week. Analysts expect a feast of good news. ⚜️Daily takeaway⚜️ 每日單字精選 ✅Index (n.): 指數、索引 (名) ✅Agricultural (adj.): 農業的、農產的 (形) ✅Commodity (n.): 商品、貨物 (名) ✅Splurge (v./n.): 揮霍 (動/名) ✅Swine flu (n.): 禽流感、豬瘟 (名) ✅Consumption (n.): 消費、消耗 (名) ✅Drought (n.): 乾旱 (名) ✅Be diverted to (adj.): 被轉移到 (形) ✅Hunger (n.): 飢餓、飢荒 (名) ✅Abate (v.): 減弱、緩和 (動) ✅Analyst (n.): 分析師 (名) — ✔︎ 按讚【每日一經濟學人】Facebook 粉專:https://reurl.cc/Lddode ✔︎ 追蹤【每日一經濟學人】Instagram 帳號:https://reurl.cc/Oqqoq3 ✔︎ 訂閱【每日一經濟學人】YouTube 頻道:https://reurl.cc/Y665dX ✔︎ 閱讀【每日一經濟學人】Medium 平台:https://reurl.cc/k00WZr — 🔶如有商業合作或業務需求,請洽:[email protected] 🔴如影音內容有誤,歡迎來信勘誤:[email protected] -- Hosting provided by SoundOn
