Not everyone is celebrating. Until now, a common route for Russian gas was along Ukrainian pipes to western Europe. NS2 means Ukraine stands to lose up to $2bn in annual transit fees. Before the taps can be turned on, the pipeline must be certified as compliant with EU law. On Tuesday Germany’s electricity and gas regulator will give Naftogaz, the Ukrainian state energy firm, a preliminarily indication of whether it plans to involve it in that process.
