Diamond Diehards: Calvin Ziegler, the Mets' Highest-Signed 2021 Draft Pick, Joins the Show

Come join us and get to know "Our Guy" Calvin Ziegler as he embarks on his professional baseball career. Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz & "The Dawg" Jeff Healy welcomed the Mets' second-round pick (46th overall) in the 2021 draft. Calvin, the highest-drafted Met to sign from his class, is a Canadian right-hander. He made his first pitch into the podcasting world with Riz & Dawg, and he was electrifying. While we might not see him at Citi Field in Flushing for a few years, Calvin has the stuff both on and off the mound to set himself up for success. Growing up in Canada, he did not get the same amount of reps as players from baseball hotbeds, and having to deal with COVID put him even more at risk of losing development time. He explained how he managed to get over those obstacles, including a huge decision in February that turned things in his favor. There are a few surprising things in Calvin's background, including the sports he played growing up. Byce, of the Lake Superior Regiment, received the Military Medal for his actions on a dangerous recon mission across the Mass River in January 1945. A statue of him was unveiled in 2016 in Chapleau.
