Did Star Wars Legends Alter Our Perception of the Sequel Trilogy?

In April of 2014, Lucasfilm declared that all Star Wars expanded material released prior to that point (except The Clone Wars) would be considered non-canon and be dubbed "Legends". A few fans felt put out by this decision, as many of them had a very emotional connection to the old material.
