Peter Hoeres is Professor of Modern History at the Julius-Maximilians-University in Würzburg. In 2019 he published the 600-page book "Zeitung für Deutschland: Die Geschichte der FAZ" (Newspaper for Germany: The History of the FAZ), the most comprehensive research on the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung to date. The FAZ is the third most-read daily newspaper in Germany and is one of Germany's leading media, meaning that it plays a decisive role in shaping the political debates of the Federal Republic. We asked Prof. Dr. Peter Hoeres about the role of the FAZ in the German media landscape, the balance of journalism and the situation of freedom of opinion and academic freedom in Germany.
