Difficulties In Social Understanding For Autistics
from The Autistic Mile · host Jim Gaffney
Understanding what another person is thinking can be difficult enough on its own—especially when the social world already feels confusing. Here, Jim and Shane explore what’s called “theory of mind”, and how some autistic individuals may struggle to intuitively recognize that other people can have thoughts, feelings, assumptions, and expectations that differ from their own. When so much of social interaction relies on implication, tone, body language, and unwritten rules, navigating those differences can become especially challenging. An autistic person may say something that comes across as blunt, insensitive, or socially inappropriate without intending any harm at all. Sometimes the issue isn’t malice—it’s simply that the hidden meaning of the situation was never obvious to them in the first place. Patience and understanding can make such a difference. Rather than immediately assuming bad intent, it can help to consider whether someone is still learning how to interpret a social rule that others take for granted. That is especially important for autistic children, who may need more time, clearer explanations, and direct feedback as they learn the “rules of the road” of social interaction. With support and experience, many can become much more confident at navigating situations that once felt impossible to read. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #TheoryOfMind #SocialSkills #AutisticCommunication #UnderstandingAutism #AutisticChildren #SocialCues #Communication #AutismAcceptance #Empathy #Patience #Neurodivergent #YouTubeShorts
