Diff'rent Strokes: S1E3: Mother's Last Visit

from Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast · host Angela Bowen

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: A Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E3: Mother's Last Visit, which aired on November 17, 1978. In this episode Mr. Drummond's mother arrives for an unscheduled visit and has an adverse reaction to her son's new family situation. Also in this episode we don't hear the word "racist" used instead Phillip Drummond calls his mother a "snob" or Willis calls her prejudice. I can only guess because it was 1978 and maybe censorship not allowing that word to be used on prime time TV, I'm not sure. It takes Willis's help to make Phillip see his mother is not just "set in her ways" and he finally calls her out on it. I loved Arnold's one-liners in this episode and Mrs. Garrett is always a delight. The sibling squabbling at breakfast a joy to see as well as Philipp having to referee. Many jokes about Arnold's short stature and his appetite were made mainly by Arnold himself. Join me next week when I cover S1E4: Prep School, which aired on November 24, 1978. In this episode Mr. Drummond is excited about the possibility of the boys enrolling at his old prep school.
