Digestion, Energy, and Balance in Ayurveda | Elizabeth Swamy

from Rooted & Wild · host Henry Hawk

What if digestion is about far more than simply how well we process our food?In this episode of Rooted & Wild, I’m joined by Elizabeth Marie Swamy, Ayurvedic Doctor, Ayurvedic Doula, yoga teacher, and founder of Vedic Wild Ayurveda, for a conversation exploring digestion, energy, and the pursuit of balance through the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda. At the center of Ayurvedic philosophy is the understanding that digestion influences far more than the stomach. How we digest and assimilate what we take in can shape our energy, vitality, rhythms, and overall sense of well-being.Elizabeth helps us unpack some of Ayurveda’s foundational ideas and what they can teach us about living in greater relationship with our bodies. We explore the importance of agni, or digestive fire, how Ayurvedic traditions understand individual constitution and imbalance, and why the same food, routine, or wellness practice may affect two people very differently. We also talk about food as nourishment rather than simply nutrients, the relationship between digestion and energy, the importance of daily and seasonal rhythms, and what it means to begin noticing the subtle signals our bodies give us.Rather than approaching wellness as another rigid set of rules, Elizabeth brings us back to something much more intuitive: learning to listen, observe, adjust, and meet ourselves where we actually are.Because perhaps balance isn't a fixed destination we finally reach.Perhaps it is an ongoing relationship between ourselves, our environment, our nourishment, and the rhythms of nature. In this episode, we explore:• The foundational philosophy of Ayurveda• Digestion as a cornerstone of Ayurvedic health• Agni, the Ayurvedic concept of digestive fire• The relationship between digestion and energy• How Ayurveda understands balance and imbalance• Individual constitution and why wellness isn't one-size-fits-all• Food as nourishment for the whole person• How our daily rhythms can influence how we feel• Eating in relationship with the seasons• Learning to recognize the body's signals• Rest, nourishment, and restoration• Elizabeth's journey from yoga into Ayurveda• How becoming a mother deepened her relationship with Ayurvedic wisdom• Bringing ancient practices into modern life• Developing a more compassionate relationship with our bodies• What it means to live in greater harmony with natureAbout Elizabeth SwamyElizabeth Marie Swamy is an Ayurvedic Doctor, Ayurvedic Doula, yoga teacher, and founder of Vedic Wild Ayurveda, where she supports women through restorative postpartum care, nourishing meals, and holistic healing rooted in Ayurvedic wisdom.Elizabeth began studying Ayurveda through her yoga teacher training before continuing her education at the Kripalu School of Ayurveda, where she became an Ayurveda Health Counselor.
