The case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia—a 29-year-old Salvadoran national and Maryland resident—exposes the authoritarian tendencies of the Trump administration and its disregard for judicial authority. Despite a 2019 immigration judge's order granting him protection from deportation due to credible threats from gangs in El Salvador, Abrego Garcia was forcibly removed from the U.S. in March 2025 and imprisoned in El Salvador's notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT). This facility has been criticized by human rights organizations for its inhumane conditions and lack of due process. ​
